âAnd then there were two.â
At the sound of his voice, Gisele glanced to her left, turning to see Emet-Selch still standing but a malm away. He watched her with ever-curious golden eyes, after the others began to make their way back to the Viis village. It came as something of a mild shock to her that he yet remained in truth, for she would have surmised the famously indolent Ascian would have grown weary of it all, with his little performance complete, and Yâshtola returned to them.
She lowered her eyes in pensive contemplation; it may well have been merely an act, but it was unkind and uncharitable of her to think of it so dismissively.
âCome, great heroine. Have you not a single word to say to me? Youâve certainly eloquence enough when demanded.â
Gisele glanced up once more, to once more gaze upon the man who could be named her direst foe, this time in earnest. Emet-Selchâs head was tilted at her, his eyes narrowed in an enigmatic expression, and it struck her then that she had seen such a gesture before. Not merely from him, but his great-grandson. Zenos may have shared his fatherâs hair of gold, but he far more favored the eccentric Ascian before her in the rest of his features.
It would seem she was doomed to suffer the curiosity of Garlean imperial royals, she thought in silent bemusement. Still, no matter the ultimate game he playedâand Gisele was not nearly foolish enough to believe all his altruism did not come with a price, in the endâhis deeds spoke for themselves, and should be acknowledged.
âPermit me to speak plainly, then: I am grateful beyond measure for what you have done here,â Gisele said softly. âYour deeds mean much to me, for Yâshtola herself means greater still, and I could not abide the thought of losing her a second time, forever.â
She did not expect the impish glint in his eyes which followed, nor the smile which curved upon his pouting lips, when he swept a graceful and characteristically grandiose bow before her. âI would never have guessed youâd wear your heart on such a fashionable sleeve, eikon-slayer,â Emet-Selch said, with a surprising lack of mockery in his tone.
âIf you would be an ally to us in truth, then I shall repay your act of good faith, and make one of my own. Of a surety, you have answered every question Iâve posed of you thusfar, and honestly; I would share my own truth in kind,â Gisele said, her mind turning and turning. Emet-Selch had his game, of a surety; but she had no less her own. That her intent was purer mattered little. The stakes were high enough all the same.
The Ascian raised his dark and meticulously sculpted brows at her words, and once more Gisele was struck by how very expressive Emetâs youthful face wasâparticularly in comparison to his cohorts, who lived to put on mysterious airs, and cloak themselves in enigmas. âOh? Do tell.â
Gisele raised her hand to her heart, idly brushing with her thumb the familiar and ever-present signet with its scarlet unicorn. âYou wish to know the secret of my strength? It is my heart, beyond my mastery of the arcane, beyond temporal titles and wealth and status, beyond even the Blessing of the Mother you so abhor. My heart, and the endless, boundless reserves of love therein. It nearly shattered this day within those Ronkan ruins, when I watched helpless as a woman who holds a piece of it nearly become lost to me again, and forever. You wish words of me, Emet-Selch? Forgive me if my eloquence fails, for he who soothed that wounded heart more than he could ever know, with a mere snap of his fingers.â
With that, Gisele crossed the short distance between them, and leaned in close to Emet-Selch, softly pressing her generous lips to his cheek. âThank you,â she whispered to him, before pulling away.
The Ascianâs golden eyes were wide in shock and amazement; he rather looked as though heâd seen a ghost, in truth. Gisele smiled, brushing past him to return to the path to the village, and feeling more than a little smug that sheâd found a way at last to silence his clever tongue. He would do well to consider that he was not the only one full of surprises, she thought.
With her back so turned to him, Gisele could not have seen Emet-Selch lift a gloved hand to that selfsame cheek, pressing it in bemusement to his warm flesh, then staring at last upon white silk stained by a hint of carmine.
