If I am being honest it is a mixture of a lot of things.

He is a trans gay man who grew up in a time when neither of those things were very widely excepted and could easily be career ending.

Another thing to take into consideration is his mental and genetic disorders. He has sociopathy (ASPD is the technical term), Inappropriate affect which causes him to smile and laugh at inappropriate times (hints why he is seen with some form of a smile most of the time), and he has albinism. So not only does he mentally process emotions and situations differently but he also looks much more different than most.

Growing up he always excelled academically and was able to start college in the US at the age of 16. He grew up in England in a wealthy family with an older sister and brother. His father wasn’t around very much because of his own research and when he was around he was very…harsh. He wasn’t the kindest, very good at manipulating, and was verbally abusive. (Kinda like Chettmen is now. see where he gets it from?) His mother wasn’t much better, if anything those two really shouldn’t have had kids. And even though his father was a biologist he saw his child born with a rare genetic disorder as a mistake. He never truly liked Jameson because his genetics were flawed, and his father being a perfectionist about everything clashed with that.

All of his life he has been singled out as the odd ball, the freak, by his parents, by his siblings, and other kids. When he came out as trans and then gay it only made the verbal abuse worse.

I’m not saying he never got any love from his family, he did. But just not a lot and not in the right way.

And once he got into the science field he was told that he wouldn’t make it because he was trans, gay, and “flawed”. So he was determined to prove everyone wrong and maybe finally make his parents proud of him by taking in his father’s footsteps to become a biologist.

So to answer your question, I think he is the way he is because of the verbal abuse he endured all his life, the mental disorders both inherited from his father and developed from abuse and anxiety, and the sheer determination to be on top and be superior due to being told he could never do it.
