Tenma and Beckerās friendship, if you can call it that, has always been interesting to me because on the surface they donāt seem to have that much in common, yet among all the medical staff at Eisler Memorial Hospital, Becker is practically the only one we see consistently hanging out with Tenma; and I wonder why that is.Ā
I donāt know if Iāve got it right; a lot of the things I am going to write about Becker are guess work, so I may be way off, but after some thinking, it occurred to me that one of the main things that brought these two together must have been their isolation. They both seem a bit isolated from the rest of the hospital staff, but for different reasons.
Tenma is a bit of a loner by nature himself, and I reckon being Japanese and a āforeignerā where he works, naturally and subtly contributes to him feeling like an outsider now and again. Also, because of his moral codes, he canāt and doesnāt want to conform to hospital politics, which further sets him apart from many of his colleagues at the hospital; and last but not least, when you are brilliant and one of the best in your field, it usually and inevitably creates some distance between you and your peers because most either envy you or put you on a pedestal and worship you or, in the case of the likes of Heinemann and his henchmen, want to use you. In short, rarely does anyone see you as their equal. So itās not very surprising that Tenma, although warm, humble, and people-loving, is a bit isolated and does not fully fit in.Ā
As for Becker, he is not a loner by nature, but he does seem to be isolated from the higher circles of the hospital, at least more than he likes to be. He appears to like being a part of that upper circle but my guess is that he is shunned by Heinemann and co. because Becker is a less than average surgeon and consequently not someone Heinmann would want to be associated with much. And maybe that kind of isolation and getting the cold shoulder was what made Becker relate to Tenma even more once Tenma fell out of favor with Heinemann. Becker had a better understanding of the kind of people Heinemann, Boyer and the rest were and of how the hospital politics worked, which he had tried to warn Tenma about in episode one.
Sometimes I think Becker stuck around with Tenma, especially after Tenma became the head of the surgery department, to fulfill his wish of being a part of theĀ āupper circleā and of hanging out with the ābetter doctorsā i.e. the Cool Kids!, but that doesnāt explain why he still tried to cheer Tenma up after Tenma got demoted. He also kept playing match maker for Tenma, which I thought was cute! So, on the whole, I guess he was a well-meaning friend? and simply liked the young genius surgeon and enjoyed spending time with him. Tenma didnāt seem to mind Becker either and seemed pretty OK with hanging out with him too.
But I still canāt get why Becker tried to discourage Tenmaās patients from helping Tenma after Tenma got arrested. (episode 51)
As for the rest of the medical staff at Eisler Memorial, to be fair, there were many decent people working there who were good to Tenma. For example, there were those two doctors that assisted Tenma in the operation on Johan. They looked like decent doctors and apparently looked up to and respected Tenma and his skills and his authority as the chief surgeon during the time Tenma was the Head of Surgery.Ā
There were the resident doctors that admired Tenmaās work!
As well as that nurse who cheered on Tenma and encouraged him to stay at the hospital.
