Pairing: Jack Abbott x reader (can be read platonic)
Summary: You find Jack up on the roof after a shift but you don't have a conventional approach to getting him to step back
Warnings: Suicide mentioned/alluded to
A/N: It appears I am back and in a new fandom! The Pitt has taken over my brain! So this idea popped in my head and comes from a slightly personal experience as someone who lives in the city of Pittsburgh lol
You push open the door and hear it click shut behind you as you step into the crisp autumn night. You frown to yourself when you notice Dr. Abbott standing on the wrong side of the railing at the edge of the roof. You let out an awkward cough so that you don’t startle him.
“You know, you live in the city of bridges, if you’re going to jump at least pick a more scenic location.” You say as you make your way towards him and the edge of the roof. You hear him let out a grunt in response, not turning to you. “I mean, do you really want to go out at your job? I feel like that sounds like the worst place to die.”
You make it over to the railing and lean against it a few feet down from Abbott to leave him some space. You let the silence hang in the air for a moment. The shift was not an easy one and you had come up here to get a bit of peace and quiet yourself.
You watch him out of the corner of your eye, you’re mostly sure he isn’t actually planning on taking a leap but you do find your chest loosening when you notice the slight shift of him leaning back on the railing instead of inching towards the lip of the building.
“I even have my bridge picked out.” You finally break the silence again.
“Excuse me?” That comment finally breaks Jack out of his own head and he turns to look at you with a deep frown on his face.
“Like if I was going to do it, I would probably go with the Ft. Dusequene bridge. Or maybe one of the sister bridges, preferably the Warhol since he made cool art.” You shrug. It was something that started as a joke between you and your college friends where you talked about the merits of the different bridges for jumping. This bled into your friends and you using those bridges instead of the unfortunately common ‘I’m going to kill myself’ jokes that are made among college students, you would say ‘I’m going for a walk to the x bridge.’ It was a dumb college kid thing but it did sort of stick with you. “I feel like the Ft. Pitt or even Liberty would be better because of the height but I refuse to die in the Mon.”
“Should I be concerned that you have clearly thought hard about this?” He asks you. His eyes have not left yours and it is very clear he is studying you. Probably trying to decide how serious you’re being.
“Probably as concerned as I should be after finding you on the wrong side of this railing.”
“That is not comforting” He frowns deeper to which you shrug.
“Next time you want to take a leap, just holler about taking a walk to Warhol and I’ll take a trip with you.” You give him a deranged smile. “And we might be lucky, River Rescue is right there.”
“And then we’d just end up right back here.”
“True, and I work with these people, not sure if I want them on the case!”
“Rude.” With that he ducks under the railing and steps over to you. “I like to think I’m a great doctor.”
“While that might be true, you will be in the trauma room next door and we’ll be relying on Shen.”
“Damn you’re right. Guess we need to suck it up.”
“Looks like it. What a shame” You give him a smile before pushing upright and following him back downstairs to handle hand offs with day shift.
It is honestly sweet that you begin to notice Dr. Abbott watching you carefully over the next few weeks. Your conversation on the roof was mostly made in jest, but he seemingly didn’t want to take the chance and decided to keep an extra eye on you. Though if he is being honest, he was pretty often watching you from across the room before that day. You brought a level of sunshine into the night shift and he had been drawn to that but now he couldn’t help but be worried that it was hiding something darker underneath.
You are having a majorly horrid shift. You hadn’t slept well, you were on your period, and the patients seemed to make it their mission to be exceptionally nasty to you. There are only a few hours left and you are just waiting to get the hell out of dodge. You hear your name being called and you head to join Dr. Ellis in Central 14 for a young female patient with stomach pains. You quickly put on a new pair of gloves and step beside her bed to await Dr. Ellis’ orders.
“I’m going to check your stomach, let me know if you feel any pain or discomfort.” She tells the girl who nods with a grimace. The second Dr. Ellis presses on the side of her stomach, she turns to face you and without any warning, she wrenches back her head and releases the nastiest stream of projectile vomit at you.
You’re too stunned to even move more than the initial flinch and it’s Dr. Ellis who steps in with a tray for the girl to puke in.
“Damn, she really got you!” Dr. Ellis chuckles as she does a take of you.
“Fuck me.” You groan before looking down at yourself to see that you are fully covered in vomit.
“Yeah I don’t think anyone will want to do that in that state.”
“Fuck off” You grit out before ripping off your gloves and stepping out of the room.
“Oh shit!” Shen starts when he catches a glance at you.
“Don’t say another word.” You shoot out as you storm past and over to the new scrub dispenser. You catch Jack’s eye as you storm off. “I’m heading toward the Warhol!”
Jack frowns after you and looks back to his residents who just shrug, neither of them knowing what you meant or what caused you to break. Being puked on was never fun and always gross, but it was nowhere near the worst thing you had encountered or dealt with and you were usually able to do with with only minor grumbles.
He quickly follows after you, shouting your name. He rounds the corner to find you quickly ripping off the puke covered top and angrily throwing it towards the ground.
“Woah, are you alright?” He asked softly as he approached you.
“Splendid.” You glare at the top, not even glancing up at him. You start to strip off your pants as well which has Jack turning around slightly to give you a moment of privacy and you quickly input the prompts on the screen to get a new set of scrubs. Once they are dispensed, you angrily step into the new ones and throw the top on.
“What?” You snap at the fact Dr. Abbott is still standing there and didn’t leave you to yourself.
“Just trying to figure out if we’re heading out together or what.” He responds calmly.
“What?” You ask with more confusion in your voice this time.
“You told me to find you if I wanted to go to a bridge so I figured it went both ways.” He gave you a casual shrug.
The ridiculousness of the whole situation dawns on you and you left out a small chuckle. “Right, well don’t worry, we can put a hold on that for now.”
“You sure you’re alright?” He asks, stepping right up to you. “Don’t tell the others, but I can’t have my favorite nurse ready to breakdown on my watch.”
“I’m fine, honestly. It has just been one of those days where everything digs under my skin and I just haven’t had a second to breathe.” You explain, taking a deep breath after you do to try and center yourself.
“Go take a breather but just don’t go too far.” Jack suggests, giving your shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
“Don’t worry, I’m too lazy to go for that far of a walk.” You give him what is meant to be a reassuring smile, but he gives you a skeptical look but eventually nods and walks back towards the center of the Pitt with you and watches carefully as you step through the ambulance doors to get some air.
He doesn’t say anything when he watches you return 5 minutes later, but a rush of relief goes through when you are back and he manages to catch an easy going smile from you.
