A new SAotV dub tune and how we made it
A new SAotV dub tune and how we made it
There’s nothing quite like going to a good gig to get the creative juices flowing… I went to an event called Mishti Dance last night and saw two great DJs , DJ Isuru and Nerm but the main act I went to see was Aniruddha Das aka Dr Das, the bass player with Asian Dub Foundation. On this occasion, he was in his incarnation as Dhangsha. This is experimental music – demanding but accessible…

Say it ain't so: the red wine myth
Back in the early 2000’s, humankind broke into delirium at what was the greatest research discovery in the history of existence at the time. Red wine had been labelled a health food (rejoice!) due to its alleged ability to reduce the signs of aging and aid heart health. A polyphenol known as resveratrol was at the centre of the claims with researchers suggesting resveratrol (abundant in red grapes) had various anti-inflammatory properties and may provide other health benefits. However, more recently this has been found to be unsubstantiated and generally false.
Recent findings
An article published on the website for John Hopkins Medicine (one of the USA’s leading health care systems) claimed that a study performed in 2014 found that resveratrol had no effect on heart disease or cancer, and whilst there may be some yet-to-be proven health benefits of red wine, resveratrol was not a contributor. In 2011, the Alcohol Policy Coalition, consisting of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, and the Australian Drug Foundation pre-empted these findings with a report entitled Myth busted: red wine no magic remedy for heart disease which claims that the benefits of red wine have been grossly overestimated. The Heart Foundation is featured in the report denouncing the use of any alcoholic substance as a preventative to cardiovascular disease.
Dishonest Dr Das
But the most condemning evidence is based around a researcher from the University of Connecticut. Dipak K. Das, high-profile director of University of Connecticut’s Cardiovascular Research Center, studied resveratrol and made published claims of the benefits of red grapes and wine. These findings were the basis of many further studies making similar claims, citing 30 of Dr Das’s papers more than 100 times each. In 2011, he won an award from the International Association of Cardiologists, however in early 2012, Dr Das was found to have committed 145 cases of data fabrication and falsification and charged with fraud. The university was forced to advise journals and researchers who had links to Das’s work of these fabricated findings dismissing any apparent links between resveratrol and cardiovascular health.
What now?
Research continues on whether or not there is any basis to the claim of red wine providing health benefits. However, the credibility of previous findings were significantly compromised with Dr Das’s charges.
An Australian researcher found that a particular red wine molecule may provide some health benefits, however, to have a profound effect on the body would require such large doses that it would likely kill off one’s liver and require a permanent state of intoxication.
So while it is not great news for wine drinkers, the case isn’t completely closed. Despite nothing having been conclusively proven that there are any benefits to drinking red wine, there is still enough interest in research that all hope is not lost. The healthy approach for now is for us to consume red wine as we would any other treat – occasionally and in a sensible quantity.

FROM NEW DR DAS ALBUM AVAILABLE ON BANDCAMP https://drdas.bandcamp.com/ "PREPARING 4 WAR" released Jan 14 2014. “Preparing 4 War” is an instrumental set that continues the ‘dubnoiz’ theme of Dr Das’s first album “Emergency Basslines.” Once again, his enormous bass melodies are set against a shifting, tense environment of noise and percussion. However, the production is heavier and the compositions more direct, indicating his development as a producer and remixer. As before, Dr Das has deliberately chosen to not use words, but to focus peoples’ attention on sound and encourage people to visualise for themselves. However, this music is seething with INTENT. Every bassline, rhythm and ‘noiz’ is a metaphor for human action and emotion. There is anger, optimism and militancy. These are politically motivated frequencies. This music is designed to make people dance, to shake down inhibitions, to make love. Dr Das is directing us to a conflict being played out in various forums and in our own minds: should we engage in trying to change things OURSELVES? Or do we continue to delegate responsibility to others? Highly recommended for headphone listening. Do not on any account, listen on computer speakers-you'll be missing half the story!
