The dormers (a.k.a. "trapeiras" or "gateiras" in Portuguese) are one of the most distinctive elements from the architecture of the Pombaline Period (1750-1777). They are also one of the most distinctive elements of the urban enviroment of Vila real de Santo António, but that is not surprising, if you consider that the "core" of this town was built between 1774 and 1776.
