hello! i'm sorry if this has been asked before, but i'm interested in getting a few snails and maybe a fish too and also live in college. What do you do when you have breaks? how do you take them home (if u do)?
Hello! I’m gonna put this under a read more cause it might get a bit long:
When on break, I used to take the whole tank with me since I live only a couple hours from my college. My tank is 5.5 gallons, which if I drain to ~20% is relatively easy to pick up and pack in the car with my other stuff. I put my fish in jars and filter cartridges in baggies filled with tank water. I’d also use some SafeStart to restabilize my cycle once set up again and monitored the ammonia levels after. Same process to set up at college again. Worked pretty well!
But eventually I did set up a cycled tank at home that I could transfer my fish to when on break. That way all I’d have to do is jar them and go. Downside to the extra tank is that it’ll require some maintenance while you’re at college. I had a large mystery snail that was the tank’s permanent resident (outgrew the 5 gal) which my parents fed. Another downside is that if you have live plants in the original tank you’ll come back to an algae filled jungle. But it makes things a lot simpler, and the algae can be cleaned out.
Overall it comes down to how much effort you can/want to put in. For shorter distances I’d just take the whole tank. But for convenience or for longer distances I’d recommend setting up a holding tank at home.

Oooookay the boys are packed in bags with towels for insulation and the temptation to open everything up and check on them is Veeeeery strong. They’ll be okay for a less than 2 hour trip I hope
Do you think my betta fish Fin Manuel Miranda will be bothered if I put him near a lava lamp?
Heya! I’m not really sure to be honest. Some bettas are more reactive to stuff outside their tank than others. There’s a chance that he won’t like the lava lamp because it’s both colorful and moving, but it’s hard to say until he sees it.
If he’s an exceptionally flare-y betta he’ll probably be bothered. But if he’s pretty chill, it should be okay and maybe provide some entertainment for him.
I know that’s not a straight answer, but I hope it helped a little at least.

I live in a college dorm, and fish are the only pets allowed. I kind of want a male betta, because their fins are just gorgeous, but I have read that they can be aggressive towards other fish. If I get a more school-inclined breed of fish I would get three or four, I think that'd be cool but they'd need more room. Idk.
I'm worried my fish is dying and I'm sad. It might be because of temperature change, and I'm also wondering if honestly he's a bit old. The problem with buying fish is that you never know how old they actually are :( well, here's hoping.
