The hilltop surrounding the doric temple of Segesta is green from the recent rains that have brought out the snails. The countryside is covered in a broom-like bush, looking very much like North American sagebrush. Kayo looked up the plants that we saw. They included wild myrtle, thyme and acanthus. Acanthus is the inspiration for the curly capitals on Corinthian columns.

Built in 430 BC, all that is left of the temple is the base, the columns, the architrave, and the pediment, but no roof. Not much is known about why it was built. One theory is that it was never fully completed as the builders were interrupted by some disaster, either human or natural.

On the road from Palermo to Trapani, up in the hills in the middle of a peaceful countryside, a Doric temple suddenly appears, looking like it was built by the Greeks, but actually built by the founders of Erice, the Elymians.
