His friend hands him a padd with a grin expression, something about an encrypted message, but he smiles because that means his family is safe. None of these horrid wars have killed them.

And yet as he removes the encryption with ease and gains access to the words he realizes. The words tell him a much different outcome. His family is not safe. They are all too different. Hated by others for it. They say they wish the science to make this kind of family never existed, but he is glad for it. Very glad. He loves his family very much.

The message is from his mother. Her ship was attacked by Tal Shiar vessels, saved only by his other father in his Bird-of-Prey managing to wrangle his crew into rescuing a Federation vessel. His other mother is safe on Cardassia, thankfully, if not facing some hardships as the planet struggles to rebuild and reshape itself. His sisters and brothers are safe, mostly, one is too close to Dominion space on Deep Space 9 for his liking but she is far too stubborn and determined. The other remains on Cardassia with their mother there.

Then the worst part by far. His father, the one he shares genetics with, has been taken by the Tal Shiar. For ‘ruining the perfect Romulan bloodlines’ the commander of the attacking ship said when he thought they were winning.

He understands everyone is distraught, he will likely receive more messages like this. But they will have to wait to be read.
