(Re-)visiting Stephen King pt. 1 -- Carrie
This is probably just another project that I'm going to abandon after a few months, but let's just pretend I'm going to stick with it for now. I'm planning on (re-)reading all of Stephen King's "major" novels in chronological order. What qualifies as a major novel is whatever I feel like reading, basically, but I'm going to try to go through as many of them as I can throughout the year.
I finished Carrie last night. I hadn't read that one before, although of course I've seen the movie a bunch of times. It was really hard not to picture Sissy Spacek as Carrie, even though the physical descriptions of the character don't resemble her at all. She's supposed to be all pimply and chubby and oaf-like. But as much as I tried to imagine her differently I couldn't get those iconic images from the movie out of my head. I imagine that will be a problem with some of the other novels, too.
There's not much to the story itself that didn't make it to the movie. The novel feels like a short story that was padded with a bunch of excerpts from fake documents like scholarly articles, court transcripts, newspaper articles, etc. It's super-annoying, because they're all written in the same unconvincing prose.
Still, it's a good story and a quick read. A good way to kick off this project. Next on the list is Salem's Lot. I started it this morning.
