Next time you find a bare patch of earth, I urge you to sit down and take a minute. At first glance it looks bare and dead, but if you sit there a minute you might find all manner of life. Moss, leaves, sprouts of grass, ants, spiders, mushrooms, beetles, flies, roots. Just because it looks like everything has been destroyed doesn't mean there isn't life there and that it isn't worth salvaging. Many times these places are located near riverbeds or creeks.
