     “Dude, it’s so hot I think I’m actually melting. I’m pretty sure I lost weight biking here, so you’re stuck with me til it cools down.”

     For someone who complained about how cold he was most of the year, Yosuke absolutely hated the peak of summer. The vacation was nice, and he loved the early and late parts of the season, but the very middle, where everything was way too hot and the cicadas were too noisy, drove him crazy. He often had to work, and when he didn’t work he was lying in front of a fan, wishing for a swift death. What did you do when it was too hot outside to function?

     “Gahhh, I hate being stuck inside! If I wanna stay indoors that should be my choice, not the freakin’ sun’s!” He flopped down on Souji’s couch, whining into one of the cushions. Though it wasn’t intentional, it was vaguely reminiscent of overdressed ladies in period pieces who became so distressed they had to lie down.

“Excuse me?”

     Dread knotted in the pit of his stomach, leaving him feeling both sick and foolish. There was so many unread texts, so many times he had been brushed off, and still Yosuke refused to accept the signs. Just like his friends in Tokyo, Souji had lost interest in him--provided he had ever truly had it. But that didn’t mean he would give up. A part of him believed he was wrong, that Souji just was busy and showed his affections in his own way. They had to be able to connect. They just had to.

     Taking out his phone, Yosuke decided to try again, sending another series of rapid fire texts to the one he still called partner. Hope was a terrible drug, draining Yosuke of life little by little, but there was no chance of kicking the habit. If he didn’t keep trying he felt certain he would fall apart, and this time he wasn’t sure anyone would be able to glue the shattered remains of his heart back together.

     [Text: Partner] hey r u goin 2 the festival 2nite?

     “Me? With plans? Dude my own parents didn’t even do something for me and they have one kid to worry about. I’m totally free.” And maybe just a little excited about spending the day with Souji. Only slightly.
