Joan Fagan and co. perform the opening "Sez I" from Donnybrook!, the failed 1961 musical adaptation of The Quiet Man.
Sad Was the Day from Donnybrook!
Performed by Susan Johnson; Music and lyrics by Johnny Burke
I've always been interested in listening to this show. It's the musicalization of one of my favorite films (John Ford's 1952 Irish master work The Quiet Man), and I really loved this song, which I'd only heard because this guy named Stephen Sondheim listed it as one of the songs he'd wished he had written. It's a really wonderful song, and it's a treat hearing it as it was originally done. I really look forward to listening to more of this score!
Eddie Foy, Jr. and Susan Johnson perform the charming "I Wouldn't Bet One Penny" from Donnybrook! on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
"Sez I" is the spirited opening number of Donnybrook!, the 1961 musical version of The Quiet Man, led by Joan Fagan as Ellen Roe Danaher*, with Clarence Nordstrom, Bruce MacKay, Darrell J. Askey, James Gannon and Alfred De Sio (who was featured in Kean later the same year, singing that show's opening number "Penny Plain, Twopence Colored").
Fagan went on to stand by for Inga Swenson in 110 in the Shade, and later took over the role after Swenson broke her ankle onstage. Her next Broadway credit was replacement understudy for various roles in the 2001 revival of Follies, including Solange, Heidi, Hattie and Carlotta.
*Ellen Roe is the character's name in Maurice Walsh's original short story. For the film, she became Mary Kate.

I gave Donnybrook! a listen on Spotify a few weeks ago and, though I found it pleasant, none of it really resonated with me. Except for this song. The other day I reblogged a fantastic Marin Mazzie version. Today I figured I should give the incomparable Susan "betcha your life a waitress earns her paaaaaaaay" Johnson her due.
And this has Debbie Shapiro Gravitte written ALL OVER IT.
