Turtles in a half shell!!!
I haven’t recently been checking Tumblr for a while, I decided I wanted to go off and focus on what I am doing, so I decided to do mini projects just for myself so I could learn new things and faster techniques, but mainly just learn from the failure or the success from it.
In the past I have modeled a LEGO character, but due to time, I rushed it in some areas and didn’t do the full process, so from learning new things, I thought I’ll set out to make a LEGO character through the whole pipeline just to show to myself I could.
I started out making a generic LEGO guy but I thought I wanted to do something different and something that would make me use different methods of approaching it. The legs, body and torso are box modelled, I did model the head as well but found I had more control just from using a sphere3D and manipulating it into the turtle head. For the arm I used a zSphere and this quickly helped me make the joint for which the arm bends and for the shell, I briefly modelled it and then went away to make the indentations. Once this was done, I took the models into Topogun so I could retopology them.
After I was happy with the models, I went away to texture them. I know for a fact Illustrator is used to create the textures and I have used it in the past but nothing like this. At first things weren’t doing what I wanted to do so I sat down with it, and went through it all and then I felt comfortable to make textures for the individual characters.
Once I was happy with how things were coming out and making sure that even the little details on the model and textures which no one really see without looking closely was placed, I knew it was time to go ahead and render it.
overall, I am extremely happy with how it turned out but mainly pleased with what I have learnt by just going over and over something again and again seeing “Would this work if I did that?”.
So all I can say now is “Bring on the next thing!”
