Why did I immediately think of Doma from Demon Slayer 😭
He's animated 💔
HI I WAS WATCHING YOUR SKETCHBOOK TOUR AND YOU MENTIONED DOMU!!!
Can i ask about your opinions on it further as well as akira if you’ve read it!!!
Hi there!! Thanks so much for watchin the video-and of course I can talk about Domu!
This might be controversial but...
I think I slightly prefer Domu over Akira 🫢, but only by a tiny margin 🤏.
I've seen Akira dozens of times and Otomo has been one of my biggest art inspirations since high school. I've read volumes 1+2 of Akira so far and I hope to collect all physical copies cos it's truly a masterpiece.
But Domu just hits different and it was so cool to see the origins of what would become Akira. It has a very Stephen King style with it's fantastical elements in a modern setting. I love how cinematic it felt for taking place in a cramped and claustrophobic environment. The monolithic apartment building and winding interiors added to the growing sense of unease.
The horror elements as well are truly some of the best I've seen in a manga. One of my favorite moments in the manga was when the police officer is suddenly shot out of nowhere in the darkness. It's creepy, it's so sudden, and I felt like I was there in the confusion of the aftermath. Another smaller moment of horror is when Sasaki is just in his room building another model and looming over him is Old Cho. Foreshadowing Sasaki's horrible demise later on and show's how Old Cho can manipulate the residents however he wants.
And don't even get me started on Old Cho- that man walked so Aunt Gladys could sprint with her arms out. A devious, creepy, and kinda hilarious character that feels like a goblin straight out of a dungeon rpg. His hat being overtaken by all of the charms and pins he's stolen just paints a picture of how long he's been at this. His persistence to maintain his routine of stealing things and causing mayhem feels childlike. Compared with Ecchan-an actual child with the similar powers-is aware that this parasite who takes the form of an old man is dangerous. It's a interesting contrast and plays into the natural friction between old and younger generations in real life.
I hope this story gets a full anime movie adaptation and they lean into the horror and thriller aspects of it. Very spooky, very epic, and I hope more people read it :))))
