"He needs you, it's bad, Will..."
Streets voice cut through the line, the pain in his words breaking her heart. She took one look at her date, a man whose last name was lost on her, fumbled an apology and darted out. The restaurant was only a few blocks away from his apartment, and she ran to him. The cold whipping at her small body, the heels clicking on uneven ground until she reached the elevator in the lobby of his building, her heart pounding as she waited for it to go up. The key to his door already in her hand. Willow didn't bother knocking, flinging the hard wood open. The room was dark, it took a moment for her eyes to adjust, feeling her way through the room until she found him sprawled out on the couch. His large frame too big for the two seater, a bottle of beer beginning to slip from his fingers.
Panic bloomed in her chest, tears welling in her eyes as she kicked the door closed and ran to his side. Dropping to her knees, a small hand brushing against his cheek, cupping his face. "Dom? Dom... what happened? Talk to me..." Her voice soft and gentle, concern overshadowing anything else. Tears welling in her eyes as she tried to get him to focus on her...

Lowering his voice to just above a whisper, he inclined his head an inch toward the two figures awkwardly resuming their idle lounge against the side of the building, unlit cigarettes in their hands. āNameās ReedāIām Streetās cousin. You got any reason to know those guys?ā
Dom Lucaās voice was flat, devoid of the usual charm that could talk his way out of a speeding ticket or into a girl's heart. He stood a few feet away from Josieās open trunk, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, looking like heād just come off a double shift and hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.
Josie didn't look up from her suitcase. She couldn't. If she looked at him, sheād stay. And if she stayed, sheād eventually break into a thousand pieces.
"My flight is at six a.m., Dom," she said, her voice sounding thin and brittle. "The lease on the London flat is signed. Itās done."
"It doesn't have to be." He moved then, closing the distance between them in two strides. He reached out, his hand hovering near her arm before he pulled it back, as if he remembered at the last second they weren't supposed to be this close. "Youāre doing this because of last night. Because I couldn't say what you wanted me to say."
Josie finally looked at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "I didn't want you to 'say' anything, Dom. I wanted you to be something. I wanted us to be more than a secret you keep from my brother. I wanted to be more than the girl who waits up until three in the morning just to make sure you didn't take a bullet on a call."
"You know I can't tell Deacon," Luca hissed, his eyes darting around the empty street. "Heās my teammate, Josie. Heās my mentor. Heād kill me, and then heād never trust me at his back again. You know how he is about family."
"I know exactly how he is about family," Josie snapped. "He protects it. He honors it. But you? Youāre treating me like a liability. Like something youāre ashamed of."
"I am not ashamed of you!" Luca shouted, the sound echoing off the brick walls of the alley. He stepped into her space, his breath hitching. "I love you. You know I do. But this job... this life... it doesn't leave room for the kind of 'normal' youāre looking for. I can't give you the white picket fence and the quiet weekends, Josie. I'm a S.W.A.T. driver. I live for the rush. And you deserve more than that."
"Don't you dare tell me what I deserve," Josie whispered, a single tear finally escaping. "I didn't ask for a picket fence, Dom. I just asked for you. All of you. Not just the parts you're willing to share when the lights are low, and nobody's watching."
She slammed the trunk shut. The sound was final.
"Goodbye, Dom."
She moved to the driver's side door, but he caught her hand. His skin was warm, a devastating contrast to the cold rain. For a second, he looked like he was going to say itāthe words that would make her drop the keys and stay forever.
His jaw worked. His eyes searched hers. But the "S.W.A.T. Luca"āthe one who played it safe with his heart so he could be reckless with his lifeāwon out.
"Have a safe flight, Jos," he whispered.
He let go.
Josie didn't look back as she drove away. She didn't see him standing in the middle of the street, soaked to the bone, watching her taillights disappear. She didn't see him punch the side of a brick building until his knuckles bled.
She just drove toward the airport, leaving the only man sheād ever loved in the rearview mirror, hoping that London was far enough away to make her heart stop hurting.
Dealing with Luca often requires a man to have a slightly thick skin (not every one of the younger officerās jokes lands the way he wants them too) and a strong knowledge of how much coffee Dom has had. When they first moved into the SWAT office, Luca tried to finagle the desk right in front of the coffee pot, but Street nabbed it out from under the Italian. From that point forward, he became the self-appointed guardian of the coffee potā¦more accurately, the guardian of how many cups Luca is allowed to consume in one shift.
Luca has already had four cupsāand they are only halfway through the shift. Seeing his friend push away from his desk and head toward the coffee pot, Street shoves away from his own, his report still in his hand. He has taken to writing them on clipboards just for this reasonāhe never knows when he will need a mobile desk.
āSorry Luca.ā He keeps writing as he blocks the younger manās progress. āI know youāve already come up with a few threats, but you donāt control me. Besides, you have another cup, and you might start vibrating hard enough to register on the Richter scale. If that happens, weāll have a bunch of guys from Cal Tech coming down to figure out why thereās an epicenter in our office.ā
A hint of an impish smile touching his lips, he glances up at the younger man. āItās for your own good, Dom. Or do you want to explain it to the Lieutenant when a bunch of professors come own here?ā
