As mentioned before in 'Dog Grooming Myths' Dog Groomers are not paid to get bitten. And it's not part of the job.
Part of my training involved some animal psychology and we were taught the ability to recognise when a dog was getting stressed enough to actually do something about it.
The 'something' could be as little as turning away as you approach them...or raising its top lip...to attacking the dryer/scissors/clippers...or biting a groomer.
Amazingly, there are owners who know their dog bites, but don't tell a new groomer because they think the groomer might refuse them. Well, they might. But to keep such vital information about a dog from a groomer, who is going to have to get very close to that dog in order to do her/his job...is appalling negligence.
These owners often 'groomer hop' and often leave their dogs to get matted, which further increases the chances of it being aggressive due to the painful mats they have had to suffer.
I've been bitten by dogs. One had an extensive history of being reactive to strangers and strangers handling them and so it was no surprise when it happened. The other one was presumed mild mannered and tolerant. The owner was very shocked when I told her, and so we watched the incident on CCTV. It showed I wasn't even touching the dog at the time – my hand just happened to be in front of its face when it bit me.
Having a small dog doesn’t exempt an owner from disclosing its history either. Groomers having to take time off to attend clinics and doctors surgeries due to infected dog bites to hands and fingers means loss of income. And if it’s a bigger dog - the consequences can mean surgery and rehabilitation for the groomer and court appearances for the owner.
We can never know exactly why a dog bites a groomer – since the dog can't actually tell us. But once a groomer tells an owner their dog bites – it's the owners responsibility to inform future groomers. It's a chargeable offence not to keep your dog under control – and that includes when it's at the groomers.
