John’s head has been so crowded today, so full of noise. He usually puts up a bit of a fight when Gale drags him off to a corner somewhere, just for a bit of fun, just to be a brat, but tonight he goes easy when Gale steers him by the shoulder to the equipment hut. John waits silently as Gale locks the door, and between that and the ease at which Gale got him here, he knows John needs this. 

Gale presses up into John’s space, crowding him against the shelves. There’s nowhere for John to go but down, and his mind quiets a little at the realisation. Gale’s doing a good job of bracketing him in, and John feels himself sinking to the ground. He looks up and Gale is gazing at him adoringly, in a way that makes John’s heart stutter. He feels warm all over, heart thumping, cheeks beginning to burn. Gale’s gaze is too much, so John hides his face in Gale’s thigh, rubbing along the stiff army cotton. He closes his eyes, tries to focus only on the texture and heat below his cheek. He feels the hat on his head being removed, a hand in his hair. His mind is quiet, finally. The hand pulls a little, and it sends little zings of pain scurrying across his scalp. John hears a whine, thinks it might come from his own throat, and he lets the hand in his hair guide him, turns his face back up to look at Gale.
