Doc Loves Garbage: Taco Bell
So I am about to lose all motherfucking credibility about food, and you are right to do it. I donât think anyone should ever trust me again. I have made my fucking mouth water in writing this because I want Taco Bell so bad, suddenly.Â
And I would say so many things about myself! I would say I am a discerning taste when it comes to food, that I donât really eat things that donât taste good. I turn my nose up at fast food, if I am going to eat something that I donât find to be a culinary experience, it will at the very least be healthy. I prefer to cook for myself most of the time, Iâm simply better at cooking than the average mid-tier restaurant line and so places that are essentially, âApplebeeâs or Olive Garden but local though*â hold no interest for me. Iâm just beyond that sort of thing.Â
I say all this and then Taco Bell comes through the wall as if to say, âOh yeah, bitch?âÂ
I quite literally made my best friend in the whole world go pick me up fifteen dollars worth of Taco Bell (Not nearly as gluttonous as it sounds. Thanks Obama, who instituted global tariffs and fucked up the Strait of Hormuz) and she did it because I am a special birthday girl and there is nothing I love more than, two or three times a year, pounding back an entire bag of cheap fats and carbohydrates that vaguely invoke the name Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, in a way that is nearly an insult by way of homage.Â
I have perfectly replicated Taco Bells sloppy-ass ground beef with TVP, and I think it actually might taste more like a beef product than whatever they hell they are practically piping into these shells like some kind of granulated meat frosting. Itâs salt packed into a crispy taco shell. Iâm not actually even sure itâs ever crispy, the bottom of each taco is like some tortured fault line in a 70s disaster movie, begging to rend themselves like garments of the mourning.Â
Look at this. Look at this âCripsy Chicken cantina Tacoâ Here it is on the menu. Beautiful, browned, crisp, nearly glowing with health. Here is what was delivered to me by said best friend in what would rightly be considered a form of violence but was in fact the exact thing I asked for:Â
Look at that. The word crisp should come nowhere near that. Soggy shells bound together by plastized cheese over tiny bits of chicken, all gently swirled in a kind of cilantro-avocado soup.Â
I ate every last bit of it. Consumed it like Saturn devouring his children, the green blood of it dripping down my chin.Â
And it doesnât even have the long-held excuse of being cheap! It wasnât cheap at all! I bought two crispy tacos (tiny, line of meat, mostly salt), one crispy chicken cantina taco (donde esta la cantina all I see is a green-tinged mess), and a chalupa supreme (Add chipotle sauce and jalapeno, sub chicken, girl itâs wrapped in a deep fried piece of bread who are you even kidding) and it was FIFTEEN AMERICAN DOLLARS and THIRTY FIVE CENTS.Â
You know what I could have done? Went to the store, bought 2 pounds of chicken thigh (4.98), a box of hard shells (2.29), shredded cheese (2.99), shredded lettuce (1.99), two taco seasoning packets (2.00), and SIMPLY STOLEN THE SAUCES FROM THE LOBBY. I would be out ahead and have leftovers, even. If I really wanted to splash out and make my total 17.24 I could also get the gordita shells to deep fry. It would be better, cheaper, and probably healthier.Â
I wonât do that. I will never do that, because Taco Bell awakens something low and animal in me, something that canât be replicated by actual food you can purchase in the store with nutritional value. I donât like who I become next to Taco Bell, but as the moon must monthly change in her circled orb, I come back to it again and again.Â
I ate like eight soft tacos at @rosepetalrevolutionâs wedding and smuggled more out in my purse.Â
*There is a place here called Doc Hollidayâs Roadhouse and people keep trying to get me to go there, I assume out of some kind of deep, low malice. I refuse to pay eighteen goddamn dollars for something described as âHillbilly Tot N Mac Nachos.,â some creation that doubtless sounded fantastic when you were stoned on skunk in your dorm room but we exist in the real world now, Kyle, to say nothing of the fact that this faux-rural-dive bar cosplay situation. We are not hillbillies in Montana, we do not have hills. No one here has ever been called a hillbilly, and you are not ingratiating yourself to me by way of some conflation of rural directness and lack of polish with what appears to be motorcycle culture. What the actual culture of your âroadhouseâ is, is 60 year old white collar man culture, desperately trying to cling to this idea of the self as outsider and somehow more âauthenticâ than other people, but Tom, you work as an electrical sales rep and wear a polo shirt. You would be immolated by the sun immediately if you stepped into a field, and you would turn tail if someone asked you to fix a fence. Your Glock (itâs always a Glock) is essentially the poorly trained pitbull of the white collar set: You want to seem tough, but itâs more likely to kill you than someone else and you have no respect for the threat it commands. You have all the seriousness of blue-haired web developers claiming they live a dangerous life of oppression in the seat of empire from their Seattle apartments. Youâre eating Godâs most dull food while pretending to a sense of an adventure you canât command on your plate, much less in your actual life. That ship has sailed and you are the man you were always afraid of becoming, mazel tov. To say fucking NOTHING of the fact that Doc considered himself a gentleman, a landowner, and an educated man, and would think of anyone that COULD be realistically called a âCow-Boy,â as it was written then, beneath him. This is because you fail to recognize that the shootout at the OK Corral was part of a larger class conflict with labor, capital, and law enforcement, because you get all your fucking history on the matter from Tombstone, which, much like Taco Bell, sucks but I adore, and I will bury myself in the earth for seven years and come up screaming before I ever eat at Doc Hollidayâs Fucking Roadhouse.
