so much shit man. most recently the government failed to pass a bill to fund itself so now the government has no money til Congress gets its shit together

ok so basically Congress needs to approve the money to run the whole government (civil service, etc.), so people from both parties try to attach legislation they like to the funding bills so the good legislation gets passed. There was some debate about renewing funding for a children’s health insurance program (which the president decided not to renew for some reason) and what to do about Dreamers (immigrants who came to the US as kids).

Despite controlling both houses of Congress, Republicans didn’t manage to pass a stopgap funding bill before the government ran out of money, so everything that’s federally funded (like the smithsonian) is closed until we get a money bill passed. It’s a shitshow and it hasn’t happened since 2013 (when we had a divided Congress, I might add)
