Inglourious Basterds (2009) Directed by Quentin Tarantino This is an entry for the @HandLetteredABCs challenge where one has to do a hand lettered drawing of an alphabet every day in February. I'm using the letters as prompts for movie choices, and drawing the letter as it appears in the title of the movie beside the sketch. "Inglourious Basterds" was Quentin Tarantino's WW2-set movie, and it's about the titular group of Jewish US soldiers that get involved in a plot to bring down the Third Reich.  The villain of the show is Col Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz in his Oscar winning role.  Literally, every shot that he is in, you can't take your eyes off him - he gives such an incredible performance that balances being evil and charismatic.  Tarantino is of course gifted at writing dialogue and character building, and what a character Hans Landa is.  The movie is brilliant and very entertaining, you would have a big smile on your face once it's over. This is a sketch of Hans Landa, and it was a suggestion by Veda (@iamdarthveda), thank you! This sketch was done with an Artline 0.2 and 0.3 (would be comparable to a Micron 005 and 01) pen. Batman Returns (1992) Directed by Tim Burton This is a submission for the @HandLetteredABCs challenge where one is supposed to do a hand lettered drawing of an alphabet every day, from 1st to 26th February. I thought I'd use those letters as prompts, for the movie choices. And, I'll draw the letter the way the title of the movie appears, along with my regular sketch. Also, it's an entry for the Facebook group #caricatureresolution2017. The challenge is actually over, but since I only did a couple of sketches in January, I thought I'd still go ahead and do some more caricatures. For today, the letter "B" - it's "Batman Returns" that I picked. The first subject on the Caricature challenge is Danny DeVito, so I drew him as the Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot from that movie. The movie is an interesting one, the first thing you will notice about it is the visuals. The cinematography, costume and production design are really good, perhaps they went overboard with the visuals here. The movie brings two of the Batman villains together, the disfigured / abandoned child becoming The Penguin, and the secretary revived by cats, Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer, who really owned the role). The storyline went a little all-over-the-place, but the movie is overall entertaining. This sketch was done with a Bic ballpoint pen. A quick Google search turned up the fact that the font used in the opening credits of "Batman Returns" is called "Matrix II Wide". I don't think I've rendered it perfectly, but it closely matches the way the "B" appears on screen. Alien: Resurrection (1997) Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet This is a submission for the @HandLetteredABCs challenge. I came across this thanks to @surbhithesrivastava, and thought I'd give it a try. I've never tried my hand at calligraphy before, but this is an interesting concept. One is supposed to do a hand lettered drawing of an alphabet every day, from 1st to 26th February. I thought I'd use those letters as prompts, for the movie choices. And, I'll draw the letter the way the title of the movie appears, along with my regular sketch. Let's see how long I can keep this up. For today, the letter "A" - it's "Alien: Resurrection" that I picked. Among the first four solo "Alien" movies (before they brought Predators in), this is the oddest one. It's from a French director, written by Joss Whedon (before we knew him as the writer-director of "The Avengers", at that time, he was the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), has a weird blend of humour, action, icky gore, and horror. This is a sketch of Ron Perlman (@perlmutations) as Johner from the movie. If his face looks weird, that's because well, he has an interesting face (haha), and also, I guess much of the movie was filmed with wide angle lenses. I saw an interesting video essay / blog post, as per which director Jeunet preferred to use very wide focal lengths, which tend to exaggerate objects that are closer to them. As per that post, the movie employed focal lengths of 14mm, 18mm and 25mm. This sketch was done with an Artline 0.3 pen, and I used watercolour pencils to add a bit of colour to it.
