Not a dumb question at all! Honestly, personally to me I tend to assume it was never even really a question to them - sometimes I like to play around with alternate versions of the story where it takes them a bit to figure it out or they don't until after 5, but realistically, I think some part of them always knew that the drive between them was something different/deeper than normal human sibling relationship. Since I like playing with what it means to demons specifically and like I already mentioned I imagine them to be two halves of the same soul, demonically speaking, Sparda might even have been the one, when he was still around, to tell them that usually a bond like theirs ends in the demon equivalent of marriage. Following that up logically it's also fun to imagine it almost like he set it up almost like an arranged marriage sort of thing, like "you two might not get along now but one day you'll change your mind" - with the twins having the expected "ewww cooties" reaction, except deep down some part of them knows it's true. I like to imagine that they might have been eachother's first kisses already before everything went down (as you might have been able to tell from some of my drawings lol). To me the tension and push/pull that comes later is not from them not knowing/accepting/figuring out the fact they feel more towards one another than regular siblings "should", that part was never a question for either of them. it's the baggage around their relationship, their misunderstandings and miscommunications, and the wedge driven between them by their trauma and how they reacted to it.
