âWhere is my wand, Draco?â Lucius asked calmly. âYour wand?â Dracoâs eyes immediately went to Luciusâ wand belt and he was surprised to see that his usual belt, which was custom made for his walking stick, which housed his wand, was instead replaced by both a different holster and wand. âWhat happened to your wand?â Draco couldnât help but smirk. Lucius Malfoy losing his wand, now that was something to behold. He thought somewhere, quite possibly pigs were flying. âYour little savior snatched it away from me,â Luciusâ face had paled with anger as he spoke, his voice a harsh whisper. âDid she now? Iâll have to remember to thank her properly for that.â Draco almost laughed at his good fortune. Now, not only did he have control of the money, but he also had the Malfoy family crest to adorn on his own wand. Some of the light from Dracoâs eyes faded at his next words however. âThat must have been just after you tried to murder meâŚwhen she bound you like an ignorant first year being pranked, as I recallâŚâ âThat is QUITE ENOUGH!â Lucius snarled and Draco chuckled, not even flinching this time when Lucius finally drew his replacement wand. Draco noted that it didnât look half as threatening as Luciusâ own and wondered if his would look as formidable with the crest mounted to it. He certainly hoped so. Theatrics for dramatic effect were nice and all, but when you could back up the bad boy look with the power, it was even better. Draco already guessed the proxy wand Lucius had was his grandfatherâs. Old wizarding families often passed down from generation to generation the head of the clanâs wand, as was the case with the one in Luciusâ hand. Ah well, let him keep it for now⌠âI donât have your wand.â was Dracoâs flat reply waggling his own mockingly in front of Lucius as if to say â âsee!â âThen you will get it back for me and quickly.â Lucius commanded. Draco quirked a brow at Lucius. âAnd why would I want to go and do that?â âBecause I told you to! We have work to do and I need my wand to do it. Itâs always best to have your own wand in battle. And believe me, Draco, there is going to be a battle. Youâve put yourself in an excellent position to spy for the Dark Lord. Now that youâre there you have to get as much information on Potter and the Order as possible. You have to do this, Draco in order to keep living. To keep us both living. And you will do it.â âKeep us both living?â Dracoâs brows knitted together. âOh now, thatâs rich. You should chose your words more carefully, Father. You donât have many threats left that bear much weight.â At the dark look Lucius shot Draco his lips curled up into a thin, ugly grimace. âOr what?â Draco challenged. âWhat do you mean, âor what?ââ Lucius growled. Draco rolled his eyes. âI mean, what will you do? Kill me? Oh wait, you tried that already.â Dracoâs voice grew cold, âAh! I know,â he continued, snapping his fingers together, âyouâll cut off my allowanceâŚâ His eyes were locked on his fatherâs now, a dark, vindictive glint sparkling in their smoky depths. He shot Lucius as sly grin. âNope,â he said shaking his head âCanât do that either I suppose, now can you. Only someone in charge of the money has that abilityâŚâ Draco trailed off, his wicked grin widening into a smug smile. âWhat?â Lucius said disbelievingly. âOh come now, Lucius, surely you heard me clearly.â Draco chuckled and moved with an easy grace, as did Lucius, both men falling into a dueling stance, wands pointed and at the ready. Lucius chest was heaving when he spoke, trying to keep a snarl from escaping. âDraco,â he asked in what he hoped was a composed voice, âWhat is it you think you have done?â Dracoâs eyes narrowed; he saw his fatherâs hand shaking very slightly. His voice was gritty with emotion when he announced quietly, with no trace of joy, âIâve taken it all, Father. Itâs all under my control now. Everything is mine.â âImpossible,â Lucius scoffed. It was impossible, wasnât it? It took WEEKS before an Heirâs Privilege could be finalized and invoked. Sometimes longer. âNow is not the time to jest with me, Draco. Iâm assuming that you tried to execute the Heirâs Privilege clause. But that isnât something that someone can just get done quickly. There is protocol to follow, ritual. Itâs a complicated process.â âI didnât just try; I did. Youâd be surprised at what having money can do to speed things along. Although Iâm sure youâre familiar with the advantage. I hope you have an excellent memory though, because all those advantages are now a thing of the past for you. âAnd, rest assured, Lucius, I am most definitely NOT jesting. I invoked the Heirâs Privilege today and there is nothing you can do about it. I am in control of the family fortune and that is the way it will remain.â Lucius was infuriated, his wand was raised and his lips were parted, âAvadaâ was ready to spring forth⌠âI would rethink that if I were you,â came Dracoâs stony interjection. âIâve taken care of it so that no matter if you kill me here or not, youâll not see one galleon more of any Malfoy money. Ever. And if you do kill me, Potter knows where I am. Heâll know whom to look for. That is, if I donât kill you first.â Dracoâs eyes radiated rebellion and Lucius was enraged. This was not possible. How could this dense boy have pulled something so complex and difficult off so easily, so quickly? It was unthinkable. Luciusâ eyes flickered dangerously. âPotter? So, you've put your trust in that intolerable dolt now have you? Foolish, stupid choice, Draco. Potter is hardly anyone to be concerned about. You know that as well as I do. And as for the other issue,â he purred softly, the menace in his voice sent a foreboding shiver down Dracoâs spine. âThat situation can be rectified.â âSituation?â Draco grinned; trying to sound unaffected and stubbornly ignoring the warning shiver down his spine. âThere is no situation, except for the fact that youâre piss-poor. And donât bother trying to garner Motherâs funds either. Sheâs being provided for directly by me. She has no allowance to speak of.â Seeing Luciusâ complexion drop a shade, Dracoâs grin grew wider. Good, keeping his mum out of harmâs way was of utmost importance. Once Lucius realized she was not a viable avenue for money, she should be reasonably safe from him. Now all he had to do was find her⌠Lucius gritted his teeth. âI see. How very fore thinking of you; almost as if you and your mother had been planning this.â Draco took a threatening move toward Lucius. âThe only thing I was planning until last night was trying to figure out how I could finish up my summer and see as little of you as possible. Mother had nothing to do whatsoever with my decisions here today.â Lucius sniffed and regarded him coolly. âReally? We shall see, Draco. But I was referring to you being the sole Malfoy heir. I may not be able to garner control from you or your mother, but I can always change your status.â Draco blinked and his heart thudded uncomfortably. Change his status? Did he mean? At the look on Dracoâs face Lucius leered at him. âYes, thatâs correct, Draco. I can always have another heir. Iâm still a young, fit man, despite what you think. And your mother has a few good birthing years left in her, Iâd dare say. Once we had another child, well, it would be most unfortunate if you were to have a, ah, sudden unpleasant accident.â Lucius sighed, âIt would certainly be tragic. But, rest assured somehow weâd manage to survive.â Dracoâs jaw dropped in shock or anger, he wasnât sure which emotion was winning at the moment. Lucius smiled darkly at his son and added, âMaybe that child would be the success that you never have been.â That was it. Draco felt himself growing sick to his stomach. He was not upset at the idea of Lucius trying to have him murdered again. Well, yes he was, but he was more disturbed by the thought of Lucius bringing another innocent child into the world, and not because any siblings would threaten his inheritance. He really didnât fancy the idea of sharing his money, but really, when it came down to it, there was more than enough of the Malfoy fortune to go around. No, what he was furious about was the idea of another blameless young life being brought into this world merely to be a pawn in some twisted game of Lucius Malfoyâs. He or she did not deserve to be burdened with Lucius as a father. They would look up to him and hope for and expect to be loved and cherished and cared for as Draco had â and would invariably be horribly, heartbreakingly disappointed, as Draco was. Draco felt sick at the thought of a younger sister or brother being all alone with Lucius, for he knew he would probably be killed before he could protect or even get to know him or her. His heart ached anew. He couldnât even depend on his mother to do anything remotely brave or selfless. Narcissa had done such a bang up job keeping him safe and shielded from Lucius⌠And, DAMN Lucius, Draco had not made any provisions for another heir being born between Narcissa and him. Heâd just not even thought twice about it. âShitâ he muttered. One HUGE loophole heâd neglected â and already it was a monumental problem. Well, Draco thought determinedly, every problem has a resolution.

Excerpt from Ch. 18 - The Warning / Three Keys:
âHello, Potter.â Draco drawled lazily. Draco watched as Harryâs shoulders tensed instantly and turned slowly to face him. âMalfoy..â Harry groaned. âWhat the hell are you doing here?!â Draco rolled his eyes, âNice to see you too, Draco. Howâs your summer been so far?â he sneered. Ron looked past Harry and instantly became alert, both Harry and Ron were casting quick glances around the club now. âIâm alone, Potter.â Draco sighed, âAlready trouble.â he thought. âWhat the bloody hell do you want, Malfoy?!â Ron growled, his face reddening with anger. Dracoâs eyes iced over as he considered Ron. âLanguage, WeaselâŚI need to talk to you, Potter.â Draco said quietly, âAlone.â âGet lost, Malfoy.â Harry spat and turned back to Ron. âPotter..â Draco said to his back, âThis is important. Would I be talking to you otherwise?â âI donât give a damn what you have to say, Malfoy.â Harry sneered. âYes, yes you do, Potter.â Draco said, his tone deathly calm. Ronâs eyes searched Harryâs and Harry shrugged and turned back to Draco. âOut with it then, Malfoy...â Harryâs voice was curt. âAlone, Potter.â âNo way am I going anywhere with you alone.â Harry snapped. âAnything you have to say, you can say in front of Ron too.â Draco sighed. This he already knew, but he had a better chance of getting through to Harry without the Weasel around. âHarry,â Draco began, âI came to warn you.â Dracoâs eyes searched the crowd again, finally coming back to Harry, serious and alert. âWarn me about what?â Harry was startled to hear Draco use his first name. âThereâs an attack planned against you tonightâŚDeath Eaters, I donât know how many, but they will probably be waiting for you when you get back to Weaselâs tonight.â There! Draco had said it. He searched Harryâs eyes for any sign he believed him. His wait wasnât long. Harry laughed, a deep, rumbly laugh and looked at Draco, then back to Ron. âYouâve got to be kidding, right? Like Iâd believe anything you have to say, Malfoy!â Here Harryâs eyes narrowed, âHow do you know Iâm staying at Ronâs?â Draco rolled his eyes, âWhere else would you be?â He sighed he knew this was coming. âPotter, why would I warn you if there wasnât really a threat to you? What gain do I have by letting you know an attack is planned?â Harry rolled his eyes and looked at Ron. Ron was shaking his head, âBloody unbelievable.â Dracoâs face was calm, but he was clenching and unclenching his jaw muscle trying to control his temper. âSteady, Malfoyâ he told himself. âPotter, lookâŚâ Draco began. âYouâve had your little laugh, Malfoy, now beat it.â Harry turned back round without another glance. Draco seethed, âGoddamn it, Potter! This is important!â He spun Harry around to face him again and Ron bolted up off his stool. Harry snaked his arm out to stop Ron. âSteady, mate, not here...â he said calmly, casting eyes around. Harryâs eyes were snapping now, fire burning within. âGood!â Draco thought. Harry was always at his best when he was mad. He thought clearly when he was under pressure. âListen to me, Potter.â Draco continued, âThis is no fucking joke. They donât mean to take you hostageâŚ.they mean to kill you! Do you get it, Potter?....KILL YOU TONIGHT!â Dracoâs voice was low, urgent. Harry replied calmly, âMalfoy, they always mean to kill me, fortunately they havenât been successful so far.â Draco blinked and looked at Ron now. âWeasley, tell him Iâm fucking serious!â âI think youâre a lying bastard!â Ron snapped. âWhat kind of sick joke is this youâre playing at, Malfoy?â âMaybe Voldemort doesnât want me to go out dancing tonight. He may be afraid Iâll meet some pretty girl, do a little snogging aboutâŚâ Harry laughed. Draco looked taken aback. All the color drained out of his face. He looked at Harry then Ron. âYou fucking, thick headed idiot. Iâm trying to save your sorry arse and youâre making jokes!â Draco looked at them flabbergasted. He opened his mouth to speak, but something caught his eye and his head snapped left, looking into the crowd. Harry and Ron looked too. Finally, he turned back to Harry and shook his head. âThis is so goddamned stupid for me to be talking to you like this, out in the openââŚ.big sighâŚâLook, Iâll be here all night, in case things get dicey.â Harry and Ron laughed. âDonât do me any favors, Malfoy.â Harry said. But he was starting to get a little worried by the look on Dracoâs face. Plus, Draco never swore, he was always properâŚseeing him so frazzled made him worry. âItâs no joke, Potter. If they see me talking to you tonight, Iâm dead by morning.â Dracoâs voice was hushed. âDaddy dear wonât let anything happen to his pride and joy.â Harry scoffed. It was Harryâs turn to be taken abackâŚDraco threw his head back and laughed. âPotter, you moron, you donât know anything do you? My father would kill me off for so much as a galleon, if it suited his needsâŚHavenât you learned anything from dealing with him all these years?â Harry and Ron were silent. âBut, your father loves you.â Harry said incredulously. Dracoâs face showed no emotion, but his eyes changed color to a steel blue, âMy father loves no one but himself. He has allegiance to the party he believes will come out on top, so he can succeed. He feels greed, hunger for powerâŚbut never love.â Ron looked ashen, âWhat game are you playing at, Malfoy?â he croaked. âTHIS IS NO GAME!â Draco yelled, then, realizing what heâd done, looked around again. âThe Dark Lord is starting his plan in motion, Potter and it begins tonight.â Ron looked at Harry, âHeâs gone completely mental.â Harry nodded, âCompletely.â
