                    it’s  a  slow  morning  at  the  book  shelf  --  not  that  bookstores  get  that  much  business  anyway.  dominik  thinks,  if  not  for  the  recent  addition  of  the  latte  machine  and  an  option  to  purchase  good  hot  coffee  at  the  reasonable  price  of  $2.50  a  cup,  he  wouldn’t  attract  many  people  at  all.    but  as  of  yet,  it’s  enough  to  keep  him  going,  so  he  doesn’t  complain.    he  sits  behind  the  counter,  a  worn  copy  of  the  catcher  in  the  rye  open  on  the  tabletop  by  the  cash  register,  the  chill  breeze  from  outside  coming  in  through  the  open  door.

“Yes brother dear, I am alive and I am eating my veggies. No I have not taken any drugs or bedded any questionable women. Now please hang up and get back to your life because I’m too old to be babied and you’re too young to baby someone...” He stopped for a second while his brother asked one final question. “Yes, I am wearing clean underwear and now I’m going to hang up and hope to God that no one heard that.”
