Il mio fuoco mi ha insegnato a dire NO a credere che emergere si PUO'
e pure se non so il futuro cosa potra' riservarmi
so che di sicuro il mio fuoco sarà lì a scaldarmi.

One of the warm-up exercises that was done after understanding modular grid was to make your own grid and then use it as structure to create a poster like composition using found material. The idea was to break away from the grid after having established one. Some of the students took references from the structures that are present around them to make their own grid. Having seen Josef Muller-Brockmann’s work already, this time the students were asked to channel their inner David Carson.
As always, I feel lucky to work with this batch. If you are in my class and reading this right now, then get back to work and finish the magazine cover we discussed today!
Second warm-up assignment from the publication design course. This was to make the students familiar with modular grid and how the grid is meant to be a structure, but the end product doesn’t need to carry the rigidity of it. The idea again was to use found material and the final composition had to be photo-copied, so you see text blocks not as boxes but with interspersed white spaces within it too. Super proud and happy with the results that the students came up with.
Teaching Publication Design at DJ Academy of Design, and it’s such a joy to see these students again!
The first exercise was to use two colour blocks with gateway sheet cut-outs and create compositions based on the principles of Hierarchy, Visual Anchor, Symmetry, Asymmetry etc.
Once the students were done with this stage, the next step was to substitute one colour with found images and the other colour with found type. The gateway sheet was the wild card and could be used for image or text.
The idea was to see how text and image respond to each other in a layout and how you balance the visual weight by treating the page as a container. I love to be a fox when giving these assignments. I think the students already know this side by now. 🦊
All the work shown in the video clip are by the second year students of DJAD.
