cilla is so deeply, unfathomably uncomfortable, and she’s never quite learned the art of a decent poker face. even with the applause and cooing endearments from everyone else in the restaurant, the socialite’s struggling to keep up appearances, even when her friend finally slips back beside her, now presumably about to be married off to someone else. it still doesn’t seem quite real, bizarre enough for cilla to murmur, “so was that a real yes or…?”
