uhhhh about the cis people writing trans character, i’ve read i think two books that were very well written, the art of being normal, symptoms of being human, and i am j that were all written by cis people just because cis people are the majority of people. i don’t particularly mind it but all of these authors had done a lot of research in order to portray the character right, and consulted with many trans people. as a trans guy, i would like for more trans people to be written by trans people
it would be nice to have that kind of representation by people who actually went through what they are writing about and portraying, but those books were amazing as well. the book ‘adam’ that was going around, though, is how not to portray the lgbtq+ community, so there are definitely ways cis people can screw things up. i think it’s fine for a cis person to write a trans character just like it’s okay for a straight person to write a gay character, so long as they know what they’re talking about
oops i apparently skipped over the fanfic part; i’m dumb sorry. uhhh, tbh as long as the author has trans people they have consulted and don’t make it seem like “”uwu i’m a soft trans baby pls make me as feminine as possible even though i’m a trans boy”” it’s all good. i like trans fics bc i like headcanoning my fave characters that i relate to as trans bc there are really no trans people in the mainstream media. i hope this helped more than my last asks lmao
Thanks for this!
I do remember reading about that horrible mess, ‘Adam’, and honestly– I can’t believe that crap got published and that it sold copies. But that’s most cis people to you, I guess. We can be so shitty and not understand, it’s terrible to see.
Going to the Context Of Fandom™, right now I’m in two fandoms, shy*n/bfu being my main, and in my other fandom– it’s a HUGE fandom, alright. So I’ve read some material that IS NOT OKAY, and i’m pleased to see people in the comments trying to educate the authors because it’s like– my dude, that is NOT how you write trans people, that’s not how you write something good.
This “uwu” situation is a big problem in big fandoms, I’m glad we haven’t had any of this– and I fear we may someday since this fandom gets bigger every day.
But then in this fandom, where most authors who have wrote trans fics are trans themselves, you can see the various ways they express themselves and how good of writers they truly are. I will always defend the trans fics in the fandom, 99% of them are pieces of actual art.
