My potentially unpopular take on the Dismas/Reynauld ship,,
Disclaimer: This is not to say that the general consensus around them is wrong or incorrect, I merely wrote this as beacon of sorts for other ppl who also have unpopular takes on the ship who may feel as alone as I do...okay?
(Also, this is a ramble, purely just me writing out what comes to my mind about them, so pls forgive me if it reads very disjointed in nature–)
I wish that ppl started making more interesting takes on Dismas/Reynauld that aren't the same super lovey dovey dynamic I see most of the time.
I feel so alone with my interpretation of them,, I think I've only seen like....2-3 ppl who somewhat share the general vibe of my take,,
Cuz, imo, them mfs are not lovey dovey one bit. They're unhealthy as fuck and developed a bond from the shared trauma of being the first ones in the hamlet, having no one else they could depend on or trust. They had to trust each other or else they'd be fucked; they'd die.
I am a firm believer that they hated each others' guts for almost the whole first year into the hamlet. They got into not just verbal arguments but also physical altercations sometimes, especially when Dismas was drunk and Reynauld had to drag his sorry ass back to their shared barracks room. Or when Reynauld was being a preachy, ignorant asshole.
Tbh, that's a whole separate issue that relates to my hc that Dismas has Ocd and Reynauld being a hoarder cuz of his Kleptomania...Dismas is ready to lose it with the junk fr. Do know that Dismas had contemplated slitting the guy's throat in his sleep over the junkyard that is Reynauld's side of their room.
And don't even try and tell me that Dismas & Reynauld didn't butt heads while on expeditions, even when the situation demanded the whole team to be unified or else they would perish.
Plus, their bullshit would regularly piss off the other heroes, them all wishing the two would just shut up or take it somewhere else out of earshot. Or better yet, try and get along more like the rest of them had managed.
They only started to somewhat get along after that 1st year, to a lot of heroes surprise. Mainly cuz of them realising how well they fight together, how they can trust each other & weirdly enough how similar ish parts of their backstories were.
But even then, they still bickered and squabbled, just not to the same intensity or level of aggression as they used to. At least the other heroes didn't have to intervene anymore lol–
The duo could at least sit together and somewhat enjoy each other's company...to an extent. I say to an extent cuz Reynauld and Dismas would criticise each other's life choices with little to no remorse tbh.
Like, Dismas is a sarcastic guy, he would make personal jabs at Reynauld all the time. However, Reynauld doesn't understand sarcasm, so he took everything Dismas said seriously which lead to arguments and or Reynauld making his own jabs. You can imagine how that ended up a lot of the time... (Also, I hc Rey as Autistic, so imagine that level of not getting jokes/sarcasm – Dismas abuses tf out of it for shits and giggles)
An amusing method Dismas found to make Reynauld shut up or to stop bothering him, is blowing smoke from his pipe directly into Reynauld's helm's breaths, basically smoking him out like a bee. Or snubbing out his cigar on Reynauld's bare skin. In retaliation to that, Reynauld would yank tf out of Dismas' longer hair, twisting it back, without much mercy.
So sometimes heroes would just find them stuck like that. Dismas digging his cigar in deeper while Reynauld pulls on Dismas' hair even more, his neck bent back to an uncomfortable degree. Neither willing to forfeit 💀
I like them nasty as fuck to each other, if you can't tell. Cuz they're both 40 something year old murderous criminals...do you really think they'd play nice or fair? (Also news flash guys Reynauld is a war criminal !! He was a Crusader ffs !!)
Hell, I even think how they even become a...."couple" (I say that very loosely, cuz imo they would never label whatever they have going on) is cuz of them being so unhealthily attached at the hip; basically regarding each other as the only "safe" person they could be vulnerable...ish with (this probably happens during year 2-3 of being in the hamlet. My campaign went on for 5 in game years and they were never separated for too long).
Their behaviour towards each other is explosive in nature but like a predictable storm if that makes sense? It doesn't matter what they did/ said to each other, no matter how bad either, they'd still never leave each other for dead.
They're lowkey almost as bad as each other in terms of their behaviour too...almost being the keyword there. That's why I think they're able to become such close "friends" despite their...differences shall we say...
I personally don't think they would have became whatever tf they are if they weren't forced together by fate, which had them on the stagecoach at the same time.
They almost feel like they...owe each other for saving one another on the Old Road if that makes sense? Probably feel weirdly indebted to each other...? Idfk.
Anyways, ik for a fact those 2 guys' first time together was a "mistake" at first (that's what they try and tell themselves).
A fucked up mixture of being afflicted, barely making it out alive, adrenaline running through their veins and the general cloud of unspoken attraction they had for each other which bubbled over into sex. Well, some sort of a sexual encounter lol.
It probably turned into an uncommunicated "friends with benefits" type of situation where either would use each other for sex under the guise of "stress relief".
However, they'd both leave immediately after without speaking much as speaking would mean actually confronting the unspoken attraction they had clearly developed for one another.
Cuz reminder folks, both of them mfs are extremely avoidant, especially Reynauld. I could 100% see them only confessing to each other when they're about to die, no way out type of deal.
Basically, they never talk things out, they just let it fizzle over without communicating so resentment and or bitterness slowly builds up on both ends until it's too late. Regret potentially being a big part of the DD2 part of their timeline?
Also, Reynauld 100% has major religious guilt and shame issues btw. He probably immediately signed himself into the Abbey after having sex with Dismas. Every. Single. Damn. Time.
Reynauld would try and convince himself that he hated it and was disgusted with himself. But just know it never stopped him from starting to be the one to seek Dismas out again, again and again. He's the world's massive hypocrite if you can't tell.
Reynauld ashamedly wants things so much, especially if it's stuff he was beaten and whipped into thinking was forbidden/wrong.
But like,, once he tastes that poison apple even just once, he wants more cuz it wasn't that bad, in fact it was very tasty.
Why should he feel ashamed and or disgusted with himself? Why forbid himself of something that he finds pleasure in? (this plays into why he's able to start seeking Dismas out more btw).
And in regards to how Dismas handles the situationship, he doesn't really have much of an issue. It probably bothers him when Reynauld is stuck in the Abbey.
Also, he doesn't really care, at first, if Reynauld is just using him as Rey explores his sexuality. As long as the fwb thing is mutually benefitting the both of them, then...why care?
Alas, actual feelings probably do start to ferment for both of them as the situationship continues. However, both are too cowardly to attempt communication about that. They'd rather they just ignore it as best as they can iykwim?
Now, in regards to DD2.
The only thing I'll say is that the two don't attempt an actual relationship until like... Post DD2 (Kingdoms). It's really up to you as the shipper to decide if they stay together or not 🤷
Imo, they do. It's just rocky. EXTREMELY ROCKY. There's definitely moments where you're looking at them and are like "why have these 2 mfs not just broken up?". And even they couldn't tell you that. Something clearly makes them wanna fight for it?
I mean, Dismas became obsessed with finding Reynauld again, and they become Amorous so much in my DD2 savefile, so they clearly do want to stay together, through thick and thin like old times...or are they just beating an already dead horse? Mm?
lt probably takes them years after Kingdoms to be in a place where they're...secure enough and not having their respective issues flare up 24/7.
TLDR: These mfs BEYOND COMPLICATED™️ and hardly anyone shares this belief with me...
If you have any similar takes to me, gladly share them in the comments or dm me, I'd love to talk 👋
I’m deep in it guys. Lots more Darkest Dungeon to come. This is a very difficult style for me to get used to, but gratifying nonetheless. I learned a lot.
I’m also writing a fan fiction that will feature a new drawing at the start of each chapter.
Would appreciate a subscribe if any of that sounds good to you. See you on the old road.
