October 16, 2013 was a repeat of Sunday’s lesson.  Except we have a new intern, Olivia, which is cool. We all practiced mounting and dismounting on the barrel.  Taylor and I found our “inner bunnies”, as I put it, and were able to hop onto the saddle. All in all, everyone got better at mounting a dismounting.

            After we all finished mounting and dismounting Taylor and I set off to fetch Chief to bring him into the arena for longeing and matching feet practice. It was a lot easier Wednesday, because both Chief and I had time to process Sunday’s lesson. So when we tried again on Wednesday he knew the game and cooperated with Taylor and I.  

Because Chief would try cutting in front here and there, I decided we should switch gears and focus on keeping him on our left (his right) and matching feet and not worry about where we were going.  We kept him on our left, no matter if we made rectangles, circles, or figure 8’s. That was less frustrating than both keeping him on our left and walking in circles. To me, walking all over the arena was more fun than just circles, although circling around the rubber hose is the idea of lounging, but I wanted to make it fun and entertaining for us and the horse, instead of repetitive circles that could cause boredom…which is what I think happened with Chief, and caused him to became tired and wanted to leave.

All in all, Wednesday was easier because Chief understood the game better, and so did I…although I do have to say, Taylor had it down a lot better than I did.
