04.03.26 Dirty Three made played a rare concert at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn
Dirty Three - Lollapalooza (Second Stage), Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, California, August 18, 1995
Take a trip back about 30 years to Mountain View, CA to hear the Dirty Three play some second-stage elegies for the Alternative Nation during the infamous Sonic Youth-headlined '95 Lollapalooza.
"Most importantly, everything's fucked!" violinist Warren Ellis exclaims at the end of one of his long, entertaining stream-of-consciousness intros (to "Everything Is Fucked" of course) ... and man, Warren didn't know the half of it!
But despite everything being fucked, listening to D3 play (probably while Sonic Youth was tuning up on the mainstage) is always a pleasure, that ragged, elemental sound rising above the chaos. Thanks to the Falcon, Greg Kay and Mr. Charlie for getting it into our ears.
Dirty Three released a new album last year — the great Love Changes Everything — but the trio has spent most of their subsequent time on other projects: Mess-Esque, the Hard Quartet, the Bad Seeds, solo albums, etc. There's even a documentary about Ellis' wildlife sanctuary?! Interesting. But I think there are some D3 live dates coming our way soon ...
Warren Says: When I first started playing, there was an addictive thing about it. It's very much like taking drugs in that you get this kick from it. You don't get it every time, but when you get it you want it again. Nothing else gives me that. It's terrifying. I get nervous about a bunch of stuff, but the two constant things are going into the studio and thinking, "Is this the day it stops?" and going on stage and it all goes horribly wrong. There are moments when it crumbles and I realize I'm just a dick with a violin. I feel healthy that this happens. It helps me keep my place in the scheme of things. It makes me stretch further. The next record I do, I always want to be the best thing I've ever done. I'm still waiting for the day I feel I've done something really, really great. That there's still a part of the experience that's mysterious is what's really attractive about it.
