Lenos-Sarcophagus
Lenos-sarcophagus with representation of the Dionysiac procession. Found in 1777 during the construction of the Vatican sacristy.
The sarcophagus, in white Nasso marble, is of the lenòs type (basin), with two lion protomes and elegant architectural partitions that frame the festive thiasos: satyrs, maenads and erotes on panthers - to the sound of flutes, cymbals and timpani - they alternate in an unbroken dance.
The work, of excellent quality, is strongly influenced by the attic and can be dated to around 150 AD.

Ello again! I read your recent (reblog? Post?) about the transitions and such from ancient to modern Greece. I saw you mention Dionysiac rites during Christmas in there and I’d love to know more! Thank you for reading, btw! : D
Yes, hello I haven’t forgotten you! I was just trying to remember the damned tags I used for posts about those rites or some other things I have heard. Some happen on Xmas, others on Clean Monday or our Carnival! It’s not so much rites as we go to Church and then we have fun dressed ridiculusly - and if you do it in a traditional sense then dicks and horns will be involved.

With a Dionysiac wine-making scene, depicting two satyrs, one bearded, holding hands, treading grapes, each wearing a nebris (panther skin) tied around the neck, flanked on the right by Silenus carrying a basket overflowing with grapes and to the left another young satyr wearing a nebris, playing a single aulos and a horn, the upper border with linked palmettes.
The body is the day-pole of the inner life, or the center of vision and appearance. When perception governs, the dream-image must, perforce, fade away. Not only the spirit, but the body as well, stands in opposition to the untrammeled growth of the soul. For that reason, the authentic expression of Dionysian ecstasy is the rending of the god’s body.
