Court records said that the “dangerous and unnecessary tasing” by two officers in Wilson, Okla., was a “substantial factor” in the death of Jared Lakey, 28, a year ago.
Two Oklahoma police officers have been charged with second-degree murder after they used Tasers more than 50 times on a man who later died, according to court records.
The officers, Joshua Taylor, 25, and Brandon Dingman, 34, of the Wilson Police Department, were charged in connection with the death last year of the man, Jared Lakey, 28, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
Wilson is a small town about 100 miles south of Oklahoma City, near the Texas border.
On July 4, 2019, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dingman were responding to a call that involved Mr. Lakey’s “acting in a disorderly way,” according to the State Bureau of Investigation.
When Mr. Lakey would not comply with the officers’ commands, Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dingman used their Tasers a combined total of more than 50 times, “which greatly exceeded what would have been necessary or warranted by the attendant circumstances,” court records said.
A Carter County deputy sheriff eventually responded to the scene and was able to help take Mr. Lakey into custody, according to the bureau. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Lakey stopped breathing and became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital in Healdton, Okla., and then to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he died on July 6, 2019.
Court records said that “such dangerous and unnecessary tasing” was a “substantial factor” in bringing about Mr. Lakey’s death.

“’In a double, we would not put a student not on aid with a student on full aid,’ said Thomas Dingman, dean of freshmen at Harvard.”
So I (full-disclosure, no aid) kind of wish this wasn’t the case. I wish I wasn’t in a room with my no aid roommates. I really wish one of my roommates had had the opportunity to live and get to know someone who didn’t have all of the privileges she does. I can shoot her a look when she complains about her laundry service, I can remind her my allowance does not allow me to eat out once a day, I can drill into her brain that I’m from a school that doesn’t send kids east. Ever. But that’s not the same as living with someone to whom disadvantage is real. When you throw three no-aid students together, they don’t really learn what kind of privileges they have, and it perpetuates the social segregation that is ever-present at this school.
“Dr. Khurana, the Harvard College dean, said his icebreaker for students — share what your parents do for work — made a first-generation student uncomfortable last year; he now asks instead for a funny story about their middle name.”
And this is why we love you, Dean Khurana.
