hello, do you know any sources that go deeper into the background of the leperous lady? for example why she was cursed and where the sorta anti-holy grail is even coming from? why do some women die after donating their blood and some survive the ordeal?
I don't have much to shed further light on that particular story. It is just as Vulgate Grail story presents it as.
A ruling lady who got incurably sick with leprosy, causing her vassals, on the advice of a wise man, resorting to ruthless means to cure her. This resulted in many deaths of maidens that, after the lady was finally cured with the sacrifice of Percival's Sister, God saw fit to destroy the lady and her people for their crimes.
The leprous lady is just some lady who got sick and it's never said if she deserved it or not. There nothing special or magical about the basin, just a tool to collect blood. It was all down to pure luck that some women, like Balin's lady, survived while others did not.
If I could hazard a guess, this "Leprous Lady" story is probably a twisted mirror of the Grail Quest itself - a ruler with an incurable condition (the fisher king) that needs to be healed by the act of a specific youth with royal and virginal status (just like the Grail knights). But it ends with the chosen hero(ine) dying while the healed ruler and its subjects get their comeuppance for their horrible and costly deeds. I suppose this arc was meant to strike some sort of critique on the Grail story's plot points but I digress.

Wip of Pellinore's family =)
Top Row is: Feirefiz (unfinished) , Tor, Aglovale, Lamorak, Alyne, Drian, Dindriane, and Percival
Bottom Row is: Belacene (not started, Feirfiz's mum), Tor's mum, Drian's mum, Pellinore himself, Queen Hedozyine (Ag, Lam, and Alyne's mum) and Yglais (Percy and Dindraines mum)
The kids are in order of their ages except Alyne and Drian are switched and Percival and Dindriane are twins.
(Source: Idylls of the King - The Holy Grail, by Alfred Tennyson)
Hmmm...
In-story, this could play up for the fact that Percival is an innocent soul and like a lot of people, doesn't know the whole circumstances surrounding Lancelot and Galahad.
But I also can't help but feel it's Tennyson trying to subtly deviate from the source material again and attempt to relieve Galahad of his unpleasant birth the same way he relieved Arthur of the burden of Mordred's conception. (Even though it could easily have been another excuse to discuss the perfidity of women again...)
