Digital Equalizer | AIF’s Flagship Nonprofit Education Program Empowering Students Across India
Elektron Octatrack OS
An equalizer is not as common on stereo equipment as it used to be. On old analog gear, including radios and turntables, equalizers were given the same amount of shelve space as the receiver. They were actually very intricate looking instruments, with needs that jumped around on a scale. There were no buttons on these devices, but rather knobs that could be fiddled with to get the correct type of sound. Modern receivers and radios include an equalizer of sorts but they don’t seem as sophisticated as the ones that use old equipment. They are usually digital and use buttons to change the increment of a frequency, rather than a dial. [embed width="656"]http://youtu.be/3iFaDNBmzPQ[/embed] Today, we still have equalizers in hardware form and they are much more robust and complicated than the rest. Some of the larger units are meant to control the sound graphics of thirty or more channels, while the smaller ones are usually built into a receiver. Still, even in digital form, the EQ is being used by instruments such as synthesizers to create effects and add to the dirtiness of modern FX units. A little bit of tweaking can also change the shape of the sound quite nicely if used properly. http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2013/06/01/elektron-octatrack-os-update/
DMG Audio - Equilibrium
Have you ever noticed an EQ on an older car stereo system? Some of them come with real simple presets – you can have jazz, live sound, flat, and pop. The list goes from there, but basically the creators have an idea of what they think a type of music should sound like. They also think they know what their EQ will sound like. The truth about EQ’s is that there is no controlled or recognized way of producing one. Each company who makes one uses a different method and a different philosophy when it comes to how they should be built. For this reason, no two EQ’s are every exactly alike. When we dig deeper into more complicated synths, such as the synths found on computer programs and digital audio workstations, the variety is so great that you might have trouble figuring out what is best to use. As it stands now there is no industry standard, except for hardware units, but those cannot be compared to digital programs. Some of the better digital equalizers use graphical representation to give the user and picture, where numbers simply don’t speak. These are preferable in almost all aspects since the eyes are more apt at finding flaws. http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=13126
