Maggie-2017 In my model folder although she is a friendâs daughter. A woman with confidence, maybe no modeling aspirations. She would make a good model, she is creative and attractive. I did enter âEat your greensâ into a state wide portrait contest and did not receive very good scores. Certainly not because of the subject. Judges donât always see what I try to convey. Judges often see and want to see really clean, really finished looking images. I shot on the premise that there is little retouching. Maybe an actual story told before all the retouching is done. Contests are generally a struggle for me. Maybe I am lazy and donât want to put in the post work. Maybe I am happy with the capture as is with a little tweak here and there...I knew before I entered it would not be a high scoring image, but I thought at least worth a merit score of 80 or above. Maybe, the 2 nights of restless sleep are plucking my nerves. Well, back to the day job. Thanks in advance for the support my tumblr followers give me, and all the reblogs.

The subject is transformed by the method of capture and conveyance.
The gnats become pixels in the digital camera, their movements, once real, become visual illusions caused by static images played rapidly one after another.
The sign for a gnat can never be a gnat, no matter how closely it resembles a gnat or how well it describes one. It is still symbolic.
Even in writing, a pictureless medium, we are constrained to signs and symbols. Words, written and spoken, are not the thing they refer to, but a new thing all of their own.
If it is true, and we know it to be true, that a representation of something is not the thing itself, how can I know or express anything? I know that a video of a gnat is not a gnat, but my raw experience of gnats is mediated too: through my physical ability to see through my human eyes and comprehend through my human brain. And the only way that I can talk about or relay information about that experience is through some form of art or language (semiotically). So what does that say about the gnat, and about me? If I didn't exist, I know the gnat still would, but my experience of them seems to be entirely internal.
The video was captured in July. Watch the pixels move. The gnats have certainly died by now. But I can still see them, or the part of them that was captured by the camera's photosensor, whatever that might be.
