different media
When I was in my teens, I was excessively in love with the film Howl’s Moving Castle. Now I picked up the book as well, curious about how it compares.Â
It’s even more different than I expected, but I’m having a great time.Â

well what do u think about the whole annulment thing between rhaegar and lyanna ? do u think it will be a part in the books as well? and is it true that it was once said that while the paths may differ the book and show will end the same ?
Yeah I think they know how it’s going to end and there may be some divergence from the book. That’s what I heard, before they even started filming, they knew where it was going. I mean, there was always divergence, even before the book series ran out. In some ways, it’s the medium that requires a different treatment, and actually I can’t even say it was a bad decision to say  make Sansa the bride in Winterfell rather than… oh what’s her name… their childhood friend. Jeyne Poole.  Because they didn’t need another character to weaken the story and if Sansa was going to come back to lead Winterfell, it actually makes her MORE triumphant and brave and strong. And it makes Theon’s struggle more dramatic. I know people didn’t like them doing that to Sansa, but it’s a better story than making it Jeyne, the fake Arya.Â
As for the annulment, I thought it was great. Didn’t expect it. Oh was Rhaegar a prick? Did we expect him not to be? He went after Lyanna and crowned her beautyqueenwhatever right in front of his wife, right? So Jon’s not a bastard. Good for story. I don’t know if that will be part of the books unless it ends up being an important plot point. Other people suggested he might have married Lyanna without divorcing Elia because Targaryens believed in polyamory, so if he married more than one woman it would still be legal. That could be a different way to handle that without annulling Elia’s marriage. Same end result with different detail, if what they were going for was a legitimate Jon Snow.Â
I kind of like to see different versions of the same story… like different productions of, say, Hamlet. Each one brings something different. So like the books give us one aspect, and the the shows bring something new to life. It isn’t going to be the same, even if it DOES follow the books, because the difference in medium requires different things. Pacing, attention to detail, characterization, setting. Inherently different. And the visual aspects of the show, the actors or costumes or set design, that’s something the books can’t really impart.Â
