Today is the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid where 916 Canadians lost their lives. One of them was Robert Ansley Cavanagh, who lived in the house where I now live. A few days short of his 18th birthday, we enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. Less than two years later, he would die in commando activities on the beaches of France. Today is the 75th anniversary of the ill fated #diepperaid in 1942 during #wwii. An attacking force of approx 10000 men, mainly #canadians made a landing at the #French port of #dieppe. The attack was a disaster, with the well prepared #germanarmy easily resisting the assault with nearly 1/3 of the attacking force killed wounded or captured. The raid was planned as a test of the coastal defences of #occupiedfrance in preparation for a later large scale invasion, which occurred 2 years later down the coast in #Normandy on #dday June 6th 1944. Recent research has uncovered an additional objective, to capture an updated #enigma #ciphermachine, as the version used by #alanturing's #ultra #codebreakers in #bletchleypark was now out of date. #history #20thcentury #europe #canada
