I am SO fucking tired of people over correcting by absolutely refusing to acknowledge that sometimes people with mental illness act out in ways that are harmful, dangerous, and violent towards others. Not everyone, obviously, just like not everyone sans mental illness is inclined to violence, but this woobification OF ACTUAL REAL DISSORDERS make me want to peel my skin off.
I/we have DID. We have a history of violence going back two decades. We've been through therapy and have learned healthy coping skills and have over all mellowed out, but that does not stop that fact that there are parts who are violent and manipulative, because violence and manipulation helped us survive. That's part of our history.
This assertion that because of the trauma and abuse that we are incapable of violence or self defense only serves to take away part of our humanity. When you minimize or try to gloss over part of our experience, you minimize us as a whole. We've spent enough years being dehumanizing, we really do not need any more of it. (Why do you think that some of us do not even identify as human?)
No alter is a trope, they are a person who is part of a whole and are far more than singular reductive adjectives, but some of us are "angry", "mean", "violent". Some of us have homicidal thought patterns and urges. We have physically hurt people in the past. That's not good, that's not a good thing to do, that's not a healthy coping skill, but if you back an abused dog into a corner he's going to rip out your throat. We are capable of acting in our own subjective self defense.
This is why I don't trust mental health "advocacy" -- you only want to see the parts you personally can stomach. Your "help" will forever fall short until until you accept violent urges and acts that are not limited to the self are sometimes part of the way a disorder is expressed. Pushing us into the shadows is only going to make it worse. How are you supposed to seek help for these issues when no one wants to acknowledge them?
We're not some uwu whumpy sad bois -- we are severely traumatized people. If you can't have compassion for our anger then your "compassion" for our sadness and hurt means literally nothing.
And I don't want to hear a damn thing from anyone who doesn't have DID. Stop speaking over us. Sit down, shut up, and listen.
I need people to understand, especially those without the disorder who are trying to do their own research, that 99% of online DID spaces are total complete dog shit. Actual garbage islands. Like almost same exact mouthfeel as Victorian Spiritualism parlour tricks. It's giving Blavatsky. It's giving giving Harry Houdini an anyersym. Maybe I'm just an old man, but I've been around for a hot second and oh the things I have seen. Just be really careful about what information you get and from who.
And for folks who have the disorder or suspect that they do -- be very, very careful about the spaces you enter -- I get it, it's a super lonely and isolating condition, but don't let that need for understanding and friendship cloud your judgment from making decisions on an objective basis. It's the opinion that no one wants, but if a group puts most or all of the emphasis on alters fucking run. You need to be sprinting in the other direction. And stop openly and boldly posting your triggers for all to see. Let's denormalize that. Let's practice some basic Internet safety.
