The SPN/Wincest/J2/Gay ship 'top & bottom' problem
- This may apply to other ships or fandoms as well, but is directed towards sam/dean ship. Message to everyone, including haters, and shippers.
First off: seriously? I don't wanna get angry but this ship is hated upon enough already? you're just as bad as those people hating on wincest or saying 'other ships are better than this ship' if you're saying 'bottom dean/sam is way better than bottom sam/dean' because it's not UP TO YOU, IT IS NOT FACT.
There's a thing called PREFERENCE I don't know if you've heard of it?? Maybe these words ring a bell: INTERPRETATION, OPINIONs, you know the fact that everyone is different, likes different things, perceives characters slightly differently. And it's a FICTIONAL ship so it's all purely HYPOTHETICAL anyway.
There are loads of fics, on AO3 or elsewhere, with bottom sam and bottom dean (or e.g. bottom!sam like that) and some with switching. I appreciate it when tags are put in to clarify, because I will more likely go to a fic with that or search that tag - I understand if they DON'T put in the tag if the sex is not a big part of the story. And actually, there are around an equal amount of e.g. bottom!dean AND bottom!sam fics, so your preference definitely has a fanbase. I'd like to think we can still be KIND to each other about this though.
Yes, if we are looking at a real-life relationship, perhaps in gay couples it is more likely to be switching between bottom or top, with maybe one or both having a preference in what position they are in when it comes to sex. Maybe you want to read something or write something more realistically. But it's okay and great to read or write fics/fanart depicting one character as JUST or ALWAYS top and bottom, because that is YOUR preference, and is usually to do with how we individually interpret that character, based on our own real-life preferences and experiences, and maybe which characters appeal to you in that way more. No one should judge you for what fanfiction you read, ok?
Sam and Dean are the EQUALLY main characters on the show, period. Many people like both. Sometimes, in fact I think maybe most of the time, and there's nothing wrong with this, if you like or relate to one character SLIGHTLY more than the other. Anyway, that person who you either feel attracted/connected/can empathise with may be your bottom (more commonly, not necessarily). Obviously a lot of people in this ship just love both characters equally, like both bottom sam/dean equally, and some fics focus on one character’s POV or story, and that’s ok, because there are so many stories about so many different characters and ships.
I have had several comments & an anon sending basic hate towards me (and others as well) for, 1. reblogging a wincest post suggesting bottom dean, well someone certainly wasn't very happy about that, and 2. on my fic complaining about the dynamics, when it was clear what it would be like, so just avoid that tag/story! Stop leaving hateful feedback, it's not helpful, if it makes you feel better leaving hate then I expect you have some unresolved issues, and honestly I'm not being unkind here, but get help or talk to people if you feel yourself hating on others for these little things, or not agreeing with you - cause most people like to be agreed with, lets face it - but to put it onto other people might negatively affect them, and it may actually lower your own self-esteem (or you already have that in the first place).
Ok, talking about 'evidence' from the show or J2 in cons and stuff that ‘oh this person is definitely a bottom/top’? Ok. I sometimes reblog things like this. It’s fun. But people are still allowed to their own interpretation or preference, even if there are ‘gifs’ or actions to justify someone’s dynamics - there’s nothing wrong with this, and often the fact that we have a mixture of ‘this person is a top’ and this same person is a bottom’ - is better for us!
So, as a message to everyone, please respect and accept other people's preferences, some people may change their preferences, these things happen. This just proves that it doesn't even matter if you're in the same ship, people still find ways to argue with each other! Especially online, where no one knows you or can see your face. Tag your stuff if you want. Leave cowardly hateful asks and see everyone rally against you. Praise someone’s work. Request. Do whatever you want.
Just be bloody respectful, and move on from something you don’t like, or appreciate that other people’s views are different from yours, cause without this the world wouldn’t go round. It isn’t hard.
