It's pretty clear what Dashut was conveying in that Q & A: He still digs her, deeply to this day. And she him. Obviously a married man should never admit that he has such feelings for an ex nor should his pals admit this on his behalf. It's the third rail. But if their passion didn't still burn, the music and live shows would never be as great as they are. So they address this poorly-kept secret on stage and occasionally in interviews and whatever else may go on remains anyone's guess.
I think that that appeared in a few of his answers, and is why it made me laugh A LOT whenever he added a caveat (I mean, he literally added it as a PS once) about how happy Lindsey is with his beautiful wife and family. He has/had a way with words, lol.
Anonymous: "Stevie & Lindsey still claim to be writing new songs about each other. Their relationship ended decades ago yet there's still more to tell? What kind of intenseness did they share? Do you think it's possible they'll never stop being the others muse?"Richard: I think there is an imprint on each others lives that will never leave. Till death do them part, as the words say. Their intensity still reflects burning embers of love, dancing on shards of broken mirror, refusing to die before they hit the ground.
So then do you think, reading between Richard Dashut's lines, he was implying the unrequited love was on LB's behalf because he 'can't' openly reciprocate it due to his life circumstances ie his marriage?
He was all over the shop, lol. I asked how he would define their current relationship. He brings up unrequited love. I ask HOW exactly does that work. He says that in some alternate universe where fate led them elsewhere than where they are now, unrequited love would have come about.
Asked to clarify AGAIN. He admits he’s hedging because some areas are too sensitive and might ‘interfere’ with his ‘current’ personal life. The only way *I* can see how “what was relevant quite a few years ago, is not necessarily relevant now” affecting his current personal life is if that relevant issue happened after he met Kristen. I mean, how’s some SnL issue from long BEFORE then going to impact anything, you know?
He then goes on to say what we all know, that when the break-up occurred, Lindsey took it harder and had less love returned to him than what he was giving, so to speak. Not exactly news. He then insists their love is “more equal” now. Which is nice......
Richard Dashut said that Lindsey's love was "unrequited." I figure since he knew them, worked with them and actually lived with them, he might have a clue.
Ha. Lord. Yes, that was VERY interesting, mostly because he was talking about ‘unrequited love’ when questioned (by me, lol) about their CURRENT relationship. Very specifically. Anyway, there’s NOTHING to say that Lindsey’s love was unrequited. Stevie’s said she’s loved and continues to love Lindsey dozens and dozens of time and I don’t think there’s any reason to doubt that. As for what Richard said:
Q: In 2003, when Lindsey was asked to define his relationship with Stevie, he couldn't, saying they'd lost all objectivity. As a 'slightly' less subjective person, how would YOU define their current relationship?dickdash answered:Like a “cat on a hot tin roof” with an emotional house of unrequited love underneath.
He then 'clarified’. Quickly. And seemingly suggested that the unrequited love is occurring in some hypothetical, alternate universe, lol. Again, I may have asked him this:
Q: Would you mind explaining and/or clarifying what you mean by 'unrequited'? On whose end? Looking at their lyrics and quotes, it seems pretty acknowledged and requited, to be honest. In Vegas, they literally said 'I love you' to each other onstage...
A: The true meaning in words can be hidden by the heart. The layer that is exposed by the lyrics only hints at the depth of the “clear water fountain”, so to speak. Unrequited is what could have been in a parallel universe had the two not met the fate that led them here. All is good, it’s good to wonder.
Some other person (not me!) then asked for MORE clarification:
Q: Sorry to beat a dead horse on this one but I'm still confused how Stevie/Lindsey's love is "unrequited" or one sided, essentially is what you're saying. That's sad! I always thought they shared a deep love equal between each other.
A: No that’s alright, beat away. I have been trying not to get too personal because they are some sensitive subjects that I don’t want to interfere with Lindsey’s current personal life. You see, Lindsey now has a beautiful wife & family. What was relevant quite a few years ago, is not necessarily relevant now. I do not want to say anything that will affect his wonderful family & home life, by bringing up certain past situations. Please understand this when sometimes I speak in generalities & cannot get too specific. Let’s just say that back in the day when Stevie & Lindsey were splinting apart, that perhaps it was a bit one-sided with Lindsey being on the more unrequited side. Today, their love has aged into fine wine, which they occasionally share together as friends, whether on tour, in the studio or just when circumstances find them together. Much more equal now, don’t be sad.
