DIANA TAYLOR
My grandmother was an artist; she painted in her studio at her house in Shaftesbury. Most of her paintings were of the English landscape though she also did illustrations for children’s stories. Towards the end of her life her paintings became quite loose and free, partly due to a cataract; I thought these were some of the best works she made.

🌟Diana Taylor @dianataylorartist ‘Helplessly watching you fall, again and again’, 2018, Oil, acrylic, plastic, vinyl, cotton, aida cloth, wool and embroidery thread on stitched canvas, 190 x 195 cm at 💥 ‘Attempts to Escape’ group exhibition curated by #mariastathi @artseen_contemporary *Open: Mon, Wed, Fri 3:30-7:30pm or any other day by appointment 👉 Diana Taylor’s textile hanging, ‘Helplessly watching you fall again and again’, 2018 highlights the crucial question, in her practice, of what is at stake. The images and processes in her work are linked by her pre-occupation with obsolescence, failure and the ruin in visual culture. Hierarchies between arts and crafts, high and low, ancient and modern and other dichotomies are de-stabilised, through the collision of materials and methods of de-construction, re-construction, painting and re-painting. The merging of Cypriot and English histories of her own cultural genealogy has undoubtedly shaped her methodological approaches of assemblage. This work is part from a series of which began with screen-printed reproductions on canvases from details of the handiwork from a collection of tablecloths, made by skilled artisans in Cyprus, that belonged to the artist’s late mother. These tablecloths are translated almost instantaneously from analogue to digital format. The processes involved then traverse through temporalities and authors, at different paces, from the hand of an unknown craftsperson to the digital screen, then to the mechanical screen-printing process, finally returning to the artist’s hand. The work becomes activated over time, through the processes and the build-up of ideas being explored and discarded.
