Sighing heavily, I let myself fall into the very uncomfortable little chair behind the register which I slammed shut just seconds ago. Today has almost been inoperative. The only time someone actually came in here and bought something was when a middle-aged woman tried to pacify her hysterical infant with a lollipop.
I mean, a small convenience store in the middle of a mall is not very, uh, convenient after all.
Every day I see a diversity of people passing by the store. Most of the time they’re in groups of teenagers or families. Nevertheless, there is a surprising amount of people running errands or shopping on their own. I know this because I have a lot of time to stare out of the shop windows, trust me.
I pull the left sleeve of my blue sweater up a little and check the time, raising a brow. At this point in time I would usually greet my only regular customer, but it seems like he won’t be coming today for once.
A while ago, one of the security guards started to come by everyday before the end of his shift to get something sweet to chew on, insisting that he absolutely needed it since he wants to always perform at his best while working, even during the last few minutes. His dedication makes him quite adorable, but I’d never admit that out loud.
Just as I was about to start a game on my phone, said security guard rushed towards the store but slowed down a few steps in front of the door. I watched him check his reflection and push around a few strands of his hair before entering.
“Hello there Mr.Jeon, I almost thought I wouldn’t see you anymore today.” I cutely smile at him.
“Hi there, I’m here for my vitamin S again.” He laughed and grabbed a cereal bar with chocolate from the little box next to the register. “I’m just running a little late since Ji- uh, Mr.Park wanted to know what happened earlier.”
I nodded. “I’ve heard a few kids were messing around on the escalators again?” I scanned the cereal bar and put the money that he put into my hand into the slots appropriate for their amount.
“There you go” I smiled and handed the bar over to him. The security guard nodded, responding to my question as he ripped the plastic package off.
“They were running up and down, pushing other people to the side and one of them got his shoe stuck and all of a sudden the fun was over.” He munched on his bar, being kind of amused by the incident.
I leaned on the countertop and rested my head on my hand. “At least they had fun before the shoe got stuck, I can’t really say that I’m having fun here being completely alone since my co-worker is still in maternity protection.”
As soon as he opened his mouth to respond, Jimin Park, another security guard and also Jungkook Jeons best friend, entered through the small glass door.
“Hi Chim!” I called out to him. Jungkook flinched when he heard me talking informally to Jimin.
Jimin and I used to be good friends in high school and spent a lot of time together, but Jungkook didn’t know that.
“Chim? You know each other?” Jungkook turned around to whisper-scream at his friend.
“Yeah,” Jimin laughed, “you alright Y/N ? Did he come for his sugar treat again?”
I laughed and nodded. “Yeah he did.” - “It’s called vitamin S” Jungkook interrupted.
“Saying sugar sounds too unhealthy, a great muscle man like me can’t afford eating sugar. It shrinks my biceps.” He flexed his arms.
“Good boy.” Jimin ruffled his hair, making him burst out into panic.
“Hyung! My hair!” He punched his smaller friends arm and went out of the shop in a hurry to fix his hair again.
“He should change the meaning to vitamin stalk” Jimin murmured.
We shared a small laugh and told each other goodbye. On his way out he grabbed the door handle and turned around one last time. “Y/N ? Be good to this kid, he’s got a thing for you.”
“Funny, Park. Go home now.”
Jimin winked at me and ran to catch up to Jungkook. How does he even- how can he wink and look that good? I grabbed my phone and stared at my reflection on the black screen, winking at it while looking like a total retard.
My clumsy ass almost dropped my phone and once I got it safe and sound in my hand, the screen lit up and caught my attention. 8 pm, that’s right, I should get a few organizational things done before calling it a day as well.
Once I arrive home, I’ll take a nice warm bath and maybe watch a movie. Yes, I will definitely do that.
I put away the shop keys and rummage around through my purse, trying to find my car keys.
After searching for about ten minutes, I guessed I must have left them next to the register once again.
I take out my shop keys again and wait for the shutter to raise at least halfway up so I can enter the shop quickly without having to wait forever until it’s completely back down again.
I open the door and see the keys laying on the countertop. Of course. I rush through the store when suddenly an acute sound hurts my ears and I drop to my knees, holding my hands over my ears out of reflex.
The two security men from earlier run into the shop and help me stand on my feet as they’ve turned off the alarm already.
Oh. The alarm.
“Are you okay Y/N ? Are you hurt? What happened?” They bombarded me with questions.
Too ashamed to maintain eye contact, I look down at my shoes and start nervously fidgeting around.
“I, forgot my keys and rushed back into the shop and I.. forgot, about.. the, uh safety gates? And went right through the middle of the shop.”
My head is still hanging down. I hear their laughter getting louder with every second.
Jimin put an arm around me. “Let’s get your keys now and just to be sure you won’t be in danger, since you’re confused, I think our Jungkookie should drive you home.”
“Really?!” Jungkook and I both exclaimed in unison.

I actually can’t believe that Jimin got Jungkook to drive me home after we protested loudly for about fifteen minutes.
I sigh as my eyes start hurting from staring out of the window, trying to avoid looking at Jungkook.
It’s quiet in the car. Both of us don’t know what to say, other than me telling him which way to drive. Nevertheless, it isn’t an awkward silence. At least not to me.
I enjoy listening to the sound of the motor, I enjoy listening to the clicking sound of the indicator when he has to take a turn, I enjoy listening to the raindrops falling onto the roof of the car.
I enjoy his presence.
Slowly, I turn my head to catch a glimpse of his perfectly sculpted jawline. Next thing I notice, is that his eyelashes are long and pretty, I envy him. My eyes wander to look at his cute round nose. Then they look a little bit lower, below his cupid’s bow. His lips look soft and rosy. His top lip may not be as thick but his lower lip is prominent, enticing me to stare at it.
I catch myself staring and swiftly turn my head around to look back at the street.
“O-oh, Mr.Jeon, you should’ve turned right at the cross road.” I pointed out.
“Call me Jungkook.” He turned his head to look at me for a second, giving me an adorable smile.
“Okay, Jungkook. I’m Y/N but you know that already.” I awkwardly giggle.
Suddenly, Jungkook pulls over into a parking lot in front of a small diner.
“I assume you didn’t have anything for dinner yet and since we would both be eating alone I thought it would be nice if we had each others company. As colleagues of course.” He unbuckles the seatbelt and takes the key out of the ignition. “I recognized this street and I often eat here since it’s on the way home.”
My heart feels all warm. “Yeah you’re right, eating alone is not that fun. Let’s go inside.” We both smiled at each other.
Jungkook left the car and ran over to my side to open the door for me, being the gentlemen he is.
As we enter the quite busy diner, Jungkook is getting greeted by a tall brunette wearing an apron, currently carrying dishes to the countertop on the right.
“Jungkook! You’re lucky, your usual table is free, just take a seat.” The man wiped sweat off his chin with the back of his hand and squinted his eyes before he yelled.
“Wow! Am I hallucinating or does our little Kookie have a girlfriend?” He ran over, stretching his hand out to greet me.
“Hi, I’m, uh, not his girlfriend. Just a colleague from work. Y/N .”
The tall man (very handsome, I may add) looked kind of disappointed. “Hi, I’m Jin. I raised Jungkook.”
My eyes went wide. “You… raised him?”
Jungkook hushed him to go back to work as he pulled me with him to sit down at a table for two next to a window.
The moment he took my hand in his made me feel weird. Is that what people mean by ‘feeling butterflies’ inside them?
The feeling is strange, unknown, but it feels right.
“He did not raise me literally, I grew up in a happy family,” Jungkook laughed, “but we did spend almost every day together. We used to be neighbors and went to the same school” he explained.
I nodded.
“Jin, you know what I’m gonna order” he called through the diner. Jins head popped up around the corner, pointing with finger guns at Jungkook.
“Already preparing it. What shall I prepare for your ‘co-worker not-girlfriend’ lady?”
I thought about it for a second. “I trust you, I’ll take the same thing.” Jin winked at me and disappeared back into the kitchen.
Jungkook and I sit up straight and grin at each other.
“So, Jungkook.” I like the way his name rolls off my lips. It feels natural, as if I’ve said it a million times already. “Tell me about your day.”
He cleared his throat and mimicked me by resting his head on his right hand.
“You already know it all, tell me about yours.”
I grinned. “Same thing here. Well, then tell me about why you love your job so much.”
“Oh, there’s quite a few reasons. I mean, my job is not as exciting either, it’s not like there'sa robbery every day. Thank god it barely ever occurs in the first place. It’s the small things that make me feel good, like helping people find things that they’ve lost somewhere, or even if it’s just simple things like telling them which way to go to find a shop. Seeing them smile, even if it’s just meant to be a kind gesture, gives me a good feeling. Making people happy makes me happy. I feel needed.”
I nodded as I listened to him. “That’s very sweet of you. I’m genuinely thankful for people like you. You’re doing a great job.”
He smiled widely. “Thank you, it means a lot.”
He feels needed. It’s exactly the opposite of how I feel. My job is not important, no matter from which perspective you look at it. People barely ever register the existence of the shop, it’s only a matter of time before it gets closed down and I have to find another place to work at.
I feel useless, worthless even. Besides Jimin, I have no other person that I’m at least a little close to in my life.
“ Y/N , are you okay?” Jungkook snapped me out of my thought.
“Oh, yeah, I’m good. Sorry, I just zoned out for a second there.” I nervously looked around the diner.
Jungkook put his hand on top of mine. “I’m sorry if I said something to upset you.” He paused for a while. “Look at me” he demanded.
I obliged and looked into his round eyes.
“Let’s be friends? We also can eat dinner together ever day from now on if you want to?”
I blinked a few times. His front teeth showed up when he smiled carefully, which remind me of the small pet bunny that I had when I was younger.
He is very straight forward and confident. I could never ask a person this directly, no matter what the question is.
“Sounds good to me” I felt a blush creeping up to the apples of my cheeks.
Two plates with very perfectly arranged delicious-looking food were set in front of us and he let go of my hand.
“Enjoy~” Jin sang as he blew a dramatic kiss while going back behind the counter.
“He should become an actor, he has a great face” I laugh. “Wow, the food looks good, I can already tell it will be my regular order too.”
I gasped as a wave of realization hit me. “Oh no, I don’t have any money with me. Can you pay for me as well, I’ll give you the money back tomorrow is that okay?” I panicked.
- “Don’t worry, my treat.”

Jungkook accompanied me to my front door as we kept talking about various things about our lives. We got to know each other better during dinner, which tasted heavenly by the way.
We shared our goodbyes and hugged each other. Jungkook said he doesn’t live too far away from here and only has to take the train for two stations. What I also found out during dinner, is that Jungkook and Jimin are neighbours and that they drive to work together, so Jimin drove back home with his car.
As I took a step into the house, Jungkook called after me one last time.
“ Y/N ?”
I turned around to look at him. “Yes?”
“You are indeed needed.”
He smiled at me before he continued his walk to the train station, while I stood on the porch, blushing like an idiot, heart racing as if I just finished a running marathon.
