"I can't."

She pauses against the hold on her shoulders, and he can feel her eyes roaming his face. She must have found whatever she was looking for, because she soon is pushing against his hands to continue leaning in toward him.

"Rose," he wards, pressing his back harder into the tree to increase the sparse distance between them. "I can't."

"Then don't; I'll do it for you," she states plainly, like it's an obvious solution. It's so gutsy that he falters for a decisive moment, and regrettably, she has her way. Her mouth is on his, and he inhales sharply to try to steel his resolve and keep still to avoid giving her what her wants.

Bad idea. Her scent fills his head, at once so familiar as the little girl he'd watched grow up, yet so different as the woman she's blossomed into. He swallows hard, trying to block out the fluctuating pheromones.

He's so focused on it that he doesn't fight it when her fingers wiggle beneath one of his hands, lifting it from her shoulder and placing it firmly against her chest, directly over her heart that's beating so much faster than her bravado hinted. The vibration of it against his hand has him unconsciously relaxing as he realizes he'd been too distracted to hear it.

A heart that's beating just for him right now. No one else. A heart that has grown and hardened to not waver in any of her endeavors. The sheer force of her unquestioning will heats his face.

He's responding before he even notices, but all too late as she slowly pulls away from him.

She's smirking down at him. He can feel it. A big, smug thing that says everything for her. Her chest rises and falls under his hand, telling of her intentions clearly as it steadies with her victory.

She plants herself in his lap and descends on his mouth with more gusto before he can even think to protest again.

She's partly a monster of his own making, and one he can't win against.
