like okay. i just want to be so clear here. here is the saga of the zombie tv show dexter that shouldn't exist. dexter (2006) was a well regarded show at the time that, like many such cases, went on for too long. it had a really famously bad finale. like iconically bad. where dexter ran away from all his problems got away with everying (500 murders) abandoned his serial killer girlfriend and infant son and went to go be a lumberjack in upstate new york. for obvious reasons everyone thought this was dumb as hell and hated it. dexter goes down in history and my heart as a show that was never actually interested in dealing with any of the questions or themes brought up by the premise of "uhhh what if there was a serial killer but he, like, only killed bad people?" ten years later, bafflingly, they say great news we're making another season of dexter. bad idea but sure. his now teen son tracks him down to be like hey dad what the fuck. but shockingly there are logically consistent narrative themes this time! dexter is shown to be a self-centered hypocrite who tries to bond with his son over their Dark Urges but he actually just wants his son to be Worse so that he's not alone. all his claims that they're killing The Right People to make the world a better place ring hollow. it has always been about power and control. the show is not subtle about this. and dexter in one last moment of selfishness and cruelty is like hey son why don't you kill me that will cause you no problems ever. and his son does and it's horrible and in dexter's last moments the externalization of his conscience, his sister he got killed back in 2013, pulls away from him, leaving him to die alone. incredible moment. and the finale that dexter always should have had, where dexter fucking dies because of his stupidity and hubris and selfishness and inability to change or to even want to change, actually happened! they fixed the worst finale ever! who knew it was possible!
