Devil's shoestring
season 3, episode 15: Time is on My Side
Dean spots a bunch of twigs above Bela’s door; later he calls her and says he knows they were devil’s shoestring, intended to keep hellhounds away. And then I guess she gets dragged to hell, which is a terrible waste of her character. What’s up with that? Anyway, devil’s shoestring may refer to Tephrosia virginiana, a type of pretty but toxic pea plant with stringy roots; or more likely, Viburnum lantanoides, also called hobblebush for the tripping hazard it poses. In some spiritual practice, the latter is supposed to bring protection by tripping the devil. Both are native to North America. The bundle of twigs we see onscreen (about 30 minutes in) are more branching than stringy, but they bear some resemblance to online product images for devil’s shoestring.
Funny that Dean calls Sam a nerd for knowing about plants but then recognizes these ambiguous ass sticks at a glance. Did he ever try to use devil's shoestring himself?
