Jakan’s fingers trembled as he searched through hiss old military trunk. He could feel from movement alone that at least three or four of his fingers were broken, and one of his three thumbs on his right hand had a jagged green protrusion that he’d need to see a doctor about but this came first.
After shaking out his old uniform, a piece of paper fell to the floor and Jakan snatched it up. It took several tries before he was able to enter the correct sequence off the paper into the galactic transmitter.
Thankfully it was one of the few items not broken and of that he was thankful. It was capable of contacting any number from across the starways so long as it was registered within the transmitter system.
“This is Flanagan’s” came a voice from the other end, “, home of the endless beer geyser and bottomless cheese wiz; how can we help you?”
“Is there a Jason Flanagan there?” Jakan slowly asked.
“One moment.” The voice answered before the line went quiet and switched to an old human record to play. The poorly conducted music played for less than a minute before the line clicked again and a new voice answered.
“This is Jason, who am I speaking with?”
“You probably don’t remember me but I’m Jaka-
“Holy friggin shit!” the human interrupted. “Jakan you old bastard, how’ve you been!?”
“You remember me?”
It was safe to say Jakan was a bit surprised at this, but the human’s continued jubilation seemed to further confirm it.
“As if I could forget the grey skinned crazy bastard how flew seventeen air missions and saved my entire platoon. How’ve you been?”
Jakan’s mouth opened but before he could answer Jacob shouted on his end “Oi Roger! Jakan’s on the line!”
“Did you say Jakan?” came a new voice on the other end as the sound of approaching footsteps could be heard.
“Is it really you Jakan?” the new voice spoke up, much clearer now. “It’s me Roger. You got me back in time for them to plaster me arm back on.”
“I remember.” Jakan answered as he recalled the fateful day. “You were the only patient I knew who was more intimidating after losing a limb.”
“That’s because he knew what his wifey would do to him if he came home without his ring.” Jacob laughed.
“You laugh now but she’s more intimidating than any amount of incoming fire.” Roger replied.
The pair of humans began laughing and despite himself Jakan began to smile as well. He never knew what it was about humans, but they had this infectious way of sucking you into their orbit of joy and before you knew it you’d be wrapped up in the emotions as well. He hated that he had to break free from the moment.
“Listen,” Jakan began, “remember when you said if I ever needed help I should call you?”
“I do.” Jacob answered. “You just saved us and were facing a court martial for ignoring your superior’s orders on that last run.”
“Well, I need to call in that help now. I need some money or I’m going to lose my place in twenty days.”
There was a silence from the other end. He had worried they would say no; hells, he certainly would have found pause if someone he barely knew called out of the blue asking for money. This was the last life line he could think of and if it fell through he didn’t know what he’d do.
“Yeah, sure thing” Jacob answered smoothly, “how much you need?”
“Twenty thousand credits.” Jakan said sheepishly.
“Jesus,” Jacob whistled, “what’d you do, piss off the mob?”
The awkward silence seemed to confirm something and Jacob continued.
“Are you in trouble with some nasty people?”
“Yes….”
“Did they do something to you already?”
“They broke my…fingers.” Jakan could not bear to continue answering these questions. Each felt like a new humiliation and reminder of his own failure.
“And these same people will be back in twenty days for the rest of the money?”
“Yes.”
“Gotchya.”
Jakan could hear Jacob muffling the transmitter on his end and saying something but couldn’t make it out.
“You just hang tough friend; we’ll get you what you need.”
------------------------------ Twenty days came and went yet to Jakan’s horror his human acquaintances had not transmitted him any funds. In fact, he had not been able to make any communication with any of them after that first call and now his time had run out.
Streams of light cut through the blinds as an expensive aircar landed in front of his store. The roar of the engines drove the ever scavenging birds away while this late at night ensured there was no foot traffic to notice the extravagance of the car. The doors slowly opened and a trio of figures emerged.
Two tall Arnaki, a species known for more muscle than brains, and a third smaller figure Jakan was all too familiar with.
“Hounuk.” Jakan spoke through gritted teeth as the two Arnaki’s kicked in then doors and let their leader in.
“That’s not a nice tone to take with me.” Hounuk replied as he walked through the shelves.
He picked up a trinket and inspected it with a dismissive eye before casually tossing it to the ground. His boot crunching on it as he walked over to Jakan sent a shiver down his spine.
“Do you have my money?”
Before Jakan could answer the store began to shake. The trio of intruders looked around expecting danger while Jakan watched several more beams of light pierced from outside. He watched as over a dozen different types of air vehicles slowly descended and landed in the lot outside his store. He watched with a slight satisfaction as a heavy duty lander crushed the intruder’s aircar underneath one of its massive landing legs.
One by one the hatches opened and loading bay doors lowered and the pilots began exiting their vehicles; all of the human.
Jakan squinted against the lights as they slowly shuffled forward and entered the store. Some wore normal clothes, others work uniforms, but the majority of them wore military uniforms that Jakan had seen many times during his final rescue flight days.
Leading from the front was Jacob, smiling and waving to Jakan as he pushed open the doors and entered the store at the head of some thirty humans.
“Jakan!” he shouted loudly, “What’re you doing here? We’ve got drinking to get to!”
He motioned for him to come over but Hounuk and his goons stepped between them.
“This one has business with us tonight.” He answered coldly. The two Arnaki moved their jackets aside to show they were carrying holstered firearms and Hounuk grinned. “Best you come get your friend another time.”
To their surprise Jacob shook his head. “You misunderstand,” he said as one by one the humans drew their own weapons, “we weren’t asking.”
Some held electro mauls, flaying knives, snub-nosed pistols, shrapnel rifles, and one near the back just tossed off their jacket to reveal their entire upper body had been replaced with robotic augmentations. They reached out with their metal hand and casually pinched a metal shelf that snapped like a twig.
Seeing that they were well and true outgunned Hounuk grunted and nodded to his two goons who ceased reaching for their pistols.
Jakan slowly began moving towards Jacob. He kept switching his gaze between the human marines and the trio of gangsters that had been hounding him for weeks now. As he reached Jacob the human reached out and put an arm around him.
“It has been too long!” he excitedly said while tugging on Jakan. He began guiding him towards the front of the store while the rest of the humans slowly closed the path behind them as they passed.
“Shouldn’t we-“ Jakan began as he left the store but Jacob shook his head.
“I wouldn’t worry about them anymore.” He remarked with a dark grim as the sounds of a scuffle could be faintly heard through the doors. “They won’t be bothering you anymore.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a large sticker and plastered it to the window of the store. It bore the symbol of a human skull wearing a metal camo patterned helmet.
When he saw Jakan inspecting the sticker he nodded towards it. “Just a little something to let anyone else know who’s got your back.”
