i have a dell inspiron 15. every so often, my i2c HID Device driver stops working and i can't use the touchpad. using an external mouse works. in the past, i have disabled and reenabled the driver, restarted my laptop, uninstalled the driver and then restarted my laptop, and run supportassist to solve the issue. these steps are no longer working. last time i used dell's remote assistant connector and we were able to get it working with a local search for drivers, but i don't remember the steps we took for that or if we were actually searching for the i2c driver or a different one that the i2c pulls information from.

the message i get in the device's description is "this device cannot start (code 10). A request for the HID descriptor failed."
