My thoughts on Reno

He is a complicated little bugger. He’s a three-dimensional person/character (whereas I am very one-dimensional lol) and has a lot more going on inside his head than he lets on. Reno appears to put on a hard exterior in front of others but allows himself to be more vulnerable around those he’s close to - but I don’t think he fully opens up and he’s got more going on than most realise. Like, I’m considering headcanoning he drinks quite a bit on his off days after the plate. He just-- doesn’t have a good coping mechanism and the events of the game test him heavily, pushing him to his limits. He’s tired and just living mission to mission half the time.

Why do I play him?

I’ve answered this so many times lol (but it doesn’t bother me). I just have a natural affinity towards villains as opposed to heroes because villains are fun, and taunting is fun but taunting isn’t a very heroic thing to do, is it? Plus Reno has cool new powers now and I get to play with how he got those - which I need to solidify sometime and write the bad science. :3c

My favourite thing about him

I think my favourite thing about Reno is his powers he uses in battle. It’s something I want to explore in a thread sometime. Watching him zip around in videos and thinking about his thought processes behind it makes me feel the fuzzies.

What breed of dog would Reno be?

So I’m actually considering a few breeds. [All information from dogtime.com]

First of all: a Basenji They’re high-energy, they’ve got long legs, and they’re hella photogenic. They’re a clever breed of dog and require an owner who can keep up with them. Also got the skinniest legs you ever did see.

Second: a Bohemian Shepherd Also high-energy, they’ve got a longer coat, and are highly intelligent. Once used as guard dogs, they protect their loved ones and watch over them. I wanted an image of one of these babies leaping for a Frisbee but tumblr said no.

Third: Redbone Coonhound These babies are loud and do not shut up. They also have the red-colour in their coat. A bit too soft in the face for Reno but they have the pleading/pouting look down.

Fourth: Pyrenean Shepherd They run. Described as “lean but muscular”, they sit more on the scruffier side, closer to Reno’s old design (or his look in Before Crisis, we’ll say). They have passion for both their family and their work.

Fifth: Irish Setter LONG babies. High-energy, again, and they’ve got a long and rich red/brown coat. Originating as a hunting dog, these babes are friendly and loyal. They hate being alone, tolerate cold weather better than warm, and are likely to bark for ages,

Sixth: Saluki Once considered a gift from Allah, these doggos are quiet but fiercely loyal. They’re difficult to train but it’s worth it in the end, and aren’t to be trusted off-leash. Fast and skinny with a high prey drive, this breed would be perfect as Reno except for the fact they’re unlikely to be loud.

what does your character pretend or try to care about? & how does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?

these tie together. the sosu points out that hes a little different than everyone around and it turns out its tied to an enclave / military upbringing. when richter speaks its generally practical and he speaks as an authoritarian figure

all the same hes secretly pleased if you destroy far harbor even after peace is declared. hes more amused u might poison yourself than interested in growing the family

and if you explore the death of brother edgar its implied richter had some hand in it, which is traitorous and not remotely for the good of the family ( though hes also doing as much, as well as the initial test of loyalty one sees, likely at the command of the high confessor )

so to me he wants to be just and fair ( to the family ), wants order and wants people to be spiritual but his past makes it difficult for him to be that, particularly since hes so useful to the high confessor as something else

he also has lines implying ‘ we cant know or question atoms will ’ like spiritual truths are unknowable, i think he feels this way in particular given the vastly different groups hes lived within. when peace is announced richters sorta ‘ ??? ok??? disappointing but i guess if tektus says so its so??? ’ but if u talk to theil, the zealot he raised, she straight up says ‘ that doesnt make sense. ’ like shes more capable of thinking for herself. i read that as her being raised up in the kind of illusion richter wants where spiritual truths can be known, can be clear, can be honest, but his world and experience is not that at all

so he tries to care about the good atomfearing life but ends up walking a shadier path
