Simoun is from a book called El Filibusterismo!! It's written by José Rizal (PH's national hero), and it's actually a sequel to Noli Me Tangeré, the first book in the duology (it was going to be a trilogy but he got executed. i miss u makamisa)

Regarding the Guy Himself, "Simoun" is actually a fake identity. He's actually Crisostomo Ibarra, the MC from Noli. At the end of Noli, he gets accused / framed for encouraging the revolution, so he fakes his death then runs away to Europe FOR 7 YEARS.

Because he faked his death, his fiancee Maria Clara is forced to marry someone else. She refuses and becomes a nun instead. This is important for Simoun's story later ☝☝☝

Another thing that happened at the end of Noli is that Ibarra met Basilio, who at the time was this poor orphaned kid. Ibarra helped him by giving him money, iirc 🤔 He is also important for El Fili...

Anyways fast forward 7 years to El Fili, Ibarra comes back as Simoun, this wealthy jeweller who has many political connections. Also his hair has somehow turned white despite him only being like. in his 30s??? 🥹

He meets Basilio, who is grown up now and is a med student. Basilio recognizes him as Ibarra, Simoun freaks out a little and threatens him 😭 But Basilio promises to keep it a secret, so Simoun invites him to join his REVOLUTION 🗣️🗣️🗣️

↪️ "Revolution??? What??????", you ask...

Well. Back during Noli, Ibarra didn't support the idea of a violent revolution. He instead wanted to promote reform through education. Also he was kind of complicit / didn't actually try and Fight Back against the govt. / church, because, well, "it's easier for everyone if we just get along :)" (NO!?!?)

By the time El Fili happens, Simoun has seen the actual damage & corruption present in the current government, and the effects it has on the people. Also, he already tried rebelling peacefully and it didn't work. Now it's VIOLENT AND BLOODY REVOLUTION TIME 🗣️

So over the course of the book he recruits people to his cause, and manipulates the friars & govt. officials behind their backs, all to kick start the revolution. A big part of his plans actually involves the students (Basilio, and the rest of his classmates), which he eventually recruits as well.

The climax of his plan is meant to be during an opera. He'll give the signal, and then his men will storm the city (Intramuos) and overthrow the corrupt government 🗣️‼️

But before that, he needs to rescue Maria Clara from the convent. At this point he's convinced Basilio to join him, so Simoun asks him to go rescue Maria Clara.

Basilio tells Simoun that she's dead.

Yeah.

Simoun crashes out immediately, and so is unable to give the signal to start, so nothing happens. A few days (?) pass, and Simoun comes up with a new plan. Juanito & Paulita (Basilio's classmates) are getting married, and HE SOMEHOW GOT TO BE THE WEDDING PLANNER? ? ? ?

Anyway. His plan is to plant a bomb at the wedding, disguised as a lamp. When the flame dies and someone relights it, it'll explode, killing everyone there (the friars and other important people are in attendance). He's also left a letter attached to the lamp, a letter that is signed by *Ibarra*. (essentially revealing his true identity)

He tells Basilio about this plan, and at first he goes along with it, but then has a change of heart and tells Isagani (other classmate of his) about Simoun's plans. Isagani throws the lamp into the river and no one dies! Woohoo!

At this point Simoun has. Quite literally nothing left to live for. So he goes to the house of one of the more sympathetic friars (Padre Florentino), and confesses to him before drinking poison and dying. He also entrusted the Ibarra family fortune to Padre Florentino, who throws it into the sea in order to ensure no more harm will come because of it.

That's kind of a summary of what his Deal™ is, but it's a lot harder to explain if you haven't read the books HAHAHA. I do recommend both Noli & Fili though, they are very good. :) I love him so bad because the contrast between his. well. Everything. in the two books is SO interesting. Simoun is literally doing and supporting everything Ibarra stood against. He's a horrible person and he knows this. He no longer has a sheltered worldview born of privilege, but yet he still values wealth and status, he still perpetuates the corrupt ideals of the govt. He is on this whole revenge quest for *love*, technically. God. It's so good.

also johnny i hate to tell u but. the whole reason mads is so insane about moby dick is because of a gacha game where they turned ishmael into a girl. he's so Evil about said game (limbus company) and ishmael that he read all the source material HAHAHA
