“Xeno was dying. He was smart enough to know it without a doubt. He drifted through the darkest depths of the sea, the faint glow of the outer dome providing just enough light to watch the blood from his wounds bloom into the water. Shadows moved through the murk, circling ever closer as his vision blurred. A flash of gold caught the dim light. Certain the deep-ocean predators had found him, he closed his eyes and surrendered to unconsciousness.”
